We had visited Messer for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and had a delightful time!

Smoked trout sandwich – the smoked trout was fresh and juicy and the sandwich was crunchy which made it into such a beautiful entree! One of my fave ones amongst the other entrees!

Polenta chips – usually polenta chips are crunchy but this version was soft and melts in your mouth! It was pretty impressive as this had pleasantly surprised me when I bit into it!

Potato & onion flatbread with speck – this was an interesting one as the flatbread was soft and fluffy but was overpowered with onions. I am a big fan of onions but this may have been a little too much for me.

Carbonara with oyster mushrooms – this was the main we had and we were not disappointed at all! The best part about this dish was the creaminess of the carbonara which did not overpower the mushrooms! I could feel all the flavors melting into my mouth as I kept on chewing!

Quince, vanilla yoghurt, filo shards – this was such a beautifully presented dish which was not overly sweet but just right to finish the day off with!

Wine – the best part of this experience was that each dish had a specific wine to match it! With their large array of wines, you can never go wrong with it!

Overall, Messer is a good classy dining place for those who want to enjoy an afternoon or night out!

The latest outing from Chef Ashley Davis (of Copperpot in Seddon – check it out if you haven’t already), Messer lands in Fitzroy.

Modern Australian (pretty much anything these days because MULTICULTURALISM), it’s mid-priced fare in a very nice setting. Teals, stone, wood, white with lines of gold. Their styling is on trend, but not trendy.

I was invited to try their lunch menu. A relatively new restaurant, we were the first at midday when it opened, but as the lunch hour progressed, more passers by came in for a bite.

We started off the trout sandwich, the crispy trout skin was spectacular. Dainty and delicious, an excellent start. The potato and onion (with speck) flatbread was surprisingly good. Visually you don’t think much but it was very moreish.

The shitake and oyster mushroom ‘carbonara’ was a nice vegetarian take on carbonara, accompanied with the roasted cauliflower, which for me was the least impressive dish. I appreciate the effort, but for $18, I’m not sure if it will satisfy at that price.

Dessert was amazing. Filo shards, quince and yoghurt. Sounds simple, tasted nice and looked impressive. A great end to the meal. The wine selection is impressive and extensive.

Service was spectacular. While I was impressed with their service for us, I was more impressed with their service for the other customers.

If I was going to say anything, for the lunch time crowd, an express menu would benefit.

More 4.5 then 5 stars, all in all, sometimes you just want a nice lunch, in a restaurant, where you can graze on some spectacular food that you can talk about while eating, drink some quality wine and receive some top notch hospitality. In summary, it’s fine-r dining, without fine dining prices.
