This is the first time Ive seen vegan Okonomiyaki on the menu. So excited to try it but a bit disappointed it was really dry and unflavorsome.
The serve was really big with lots of shallots inside and on top.
There was only one waiter in this tiny shop. The decor was uncharacteristic of a cafe that I walked passed it without realizing!!
This little joint caught our eye while walking down Smith Street doing some errands. Luckily for us we havent had lunch yet so we decided to step inside. Im glad we did.
Upon stepping into the restaurant, it is a very small restaurant with only three standalone tables and a bench against the front window. The place has a very homely ambience and very comforting.
On the menu there are two main sections for food; okonomi-yaki (roughly translated into Japanese pancakes, although not really pancakes) and donburi (rice topped things like curry or pork).
We had the seafood okonomi-yaki topped with homemade sauce and mayo. This place features Osaka-style of okonomi-yaki. It is filled with vegetables and the batter is very light and crunchy. It took me straight back to the time I visited Osaka. Typically the places in Australia serve an okonomi-yaki which is very thick and full of batter, more reminiscent of the western pancakes. This place stays true to the true Japanese cooking style. To quench the thirst, we had a yuzu-nade with mint. Yuzu is a citrus-type fruit which is commonly used in asian countries like Japan and Korea. Think of it as a Japanese lemonade! Very refreshing and pair well with the okonomi-yaki.
Definitely a place to visit for true Osaka-styled okonomi-yaki! Will definitely come back again for round two!!
Cute & quiet cafe. Good service although food takes quite a while to come out. I had the seafood okinomiyaki & it was delicious. Possibly a bit too much sauce on top for my liking. Prices are pretty expensive too, but I suppose all ingredients are homemade
What a delicious okonomiyaki! I tried the pork belly one. It was quite filling and the sauce was definitely better than other okonomiyaki i had in various Japanese restaurants in Melbourne when the okonomiyaki would simply be drenched in mayonnaise. Papirica also does dessert really well. The green tea tiramisu and taiyaki were to die for. Portion is generous. Make sure you come with an empty stomach.
This place is simply ADORABLE and they have some pretty unique japanese vegan dishes on their menu! I had their okonomiyaki and it was pretty tasty. I look forwards to going back and trying their curry at some point as well as they were unfortunately out of the vegan curry when I visited. The staff was friendly and service was quick too! Not to mention it’s pretty affordable.
If youre sick of dodgy or mediocre at best okonomiyaki, then you need to visit this place!! They bring you back to Japan in their dainty and petite cafe and cook you authentic and tasty okonomiyaki that reminds you why you feel in love with it…
What a gorgeous little cafe – perfect for a lazy brunch/lunch. We came to Papirica specifically seeking out okonomiyaki and werent disappointed. We tried both the seafood and pork okonomiyaki and they were great! Lots of flavor, yummy sauce and a good mix of textures with the vegetables with either squid & prawns or crispy pork. We were also tempted by the taiyaki on display – and were glad we ordered it as it was also delish, with a generous red bean filling and butter on the side. I probably wouldve given it a 3.5-4 (if that rating still existed) based on the food alone, but the cute ambience in the cafe, with its relaxed, quirky vibe and little trinkets on display makes it a definite 4 rating for me. Its a definite will come again!
