Rating it higher for the potential – rather than what it is serving now.

    Ordered:
Prawn & Vegetable tempura teishouku ($15.00)
    Dengaku Tofu teishouku ($13.00)
Pork Katsu: Pork katsu with homemade katsu sauce ($14.00)
    Chicken Karaage: ($13.00)
Eggplant Misoyaki: Eggplant with Miso Sauce ($12.00)
    Small Sashimi ($17.00)
Takoyaki: Deep fried octopus balls with mayo and takoyaki sauce ($10.00)

    Review:
If you were wondering why our orders were exactly the same @Cindy it’s because we ate together.
Incredibly similar experience – the Eggplant Misoyaki is a must have.
Although the miscommunication with the waitress was unfortunate and inconvenient, the place rectified their mistake with possibly one of the best complimentary matcha icecreams with the sweetest drizzle of chocolate sauce.

The interior is absolutely stunning and a step towards a more ‘classy’ place. With thoughtful coat hooks, the small Japanese themed figurines by the door, I’m in love with the details.
I genuinely hope this place gets an opportunity to prove itself – give it a go!

Love the diversity of cuisines that Footscray has now! Kaiseki is a Japanese restaurant serving both BBQ and traditional Japanese dishes.

    ordered:
    $17 small sashimi
    $13 chicken karage
    $10 takoyaki
    $13 eggplant misoyaki
$15 special lunch set (prawn/vege tempura)
    $13 tofu special lunch set

Affordable place at Footscray that serves fresh Sashimi with reasonable proportions. Eggplant misoyaki however was my favourite from the dining experience. Lunch specials were nothing special and takoyaki was nothing but mediocre. Now for the service, it was very disorganised despite the nice waitress, she messed up our orders multiple times; forgetting spoons, bringing out two extra miso soups when we told her to get two extra spoons and of course the chefs forgot our rice and miso soups and therefore we needed to inform them about it. But all in all it was a good experience! we appreciated the complimentary ice cream at the end of the meal handed out by the chef himself.

Would’ve definitely given a higher rating if the service was more organised and precise.

What a surprise! I walked in expecting a simple lunch and got blown away by what I got. Fresh Sashimi, tasty Miso, nicely seasoned salad, with a fantastic presentation. I love Japanese food and am ecstatic that a new Japanese restaurant of this caliber has opened up in Footscray. Keep up the good work, I’ll be coming back many times to try everything on the menu!

Tasty and affordable Japanese food out in Melbourne’s west. Kaiseki Japanese Restaurant offers an extremely large (slightly overwhelming) menu offering an all-you-can-eat set menu (where you can choose a selection of dishes from the provided range) as well as a la carte dishes. Not the most authentic Japanese food, but it is definitely the most value-for-money experience I have come across.

Their charcoal grill meats enhance the experience by involving the customer in the grilling of the meats. Though it isn’t a necessity here, in my opinion. The must-try’s include their Pork and/or Chicken Katsu, and their Tempura, of which the batter is super crispy, crunchy and delicious. The sushi/sashimi platter offers a refreshing option to the other cooked, grilled or fried dishes.

Staff are friendly, and the venue decor has quite an authentic and intriguing feel to it with a rustic wooden design, making you feel like you are dining in an alleyway somewhere in Japan. The casual nature of the dining experience (you press a button to let the staff know you are ready to order) proves this restaurant a good choice for those living close by, who are seeking an exotic cuisine, without all the fuss.

More a 4.5. Came here with a few friends for lunch and opt for the All you can eat Charcoal BBQ and Japanese buffet option. For $32.99 the food is really fresh, made to order and came out piping hot.

Some favorite dishes to note are:
    – eggplant misoyaki: creative dish placed inside the eggplant shell. Soft, juicy eggplant in their nice sauce.
    – salmon nigiri: classic fresh raw salmon on rice.
    – croquette: super fluffy and creamy inside and crunchy on the outside.

Charcoal BBQ was ok. The Angus beef, pork belly, beef flank and bolar blade were not marinated as a dipping sauce was provided and it brings out the flavor. It would be great if there were a few more different dipping sauce options eg. Ginger, sesame, etc. Nevertheless, the meat had a nice Charcoal taste to it. It wasn’t sliced very thin so there was some texture biting it, but wasn’t exactly melt-in-mouth soft beef and some were a bit chewy.

The chicken thigh fillet had a thin brush of teriyaki-like sauce and sprinkled in sesame seeds. This had more flavour and was one of our favorites.

The dessert was matcha and black sesame ice cream on red bean. I liked the black sesame flavor more.

Overall, it was a really nice lunch here. Thank you for inviting us.

  • Eat. Sleep. Create. Repeat.

Booked a table for All you can Eat. Food was yum and a great place for friends gathering as the staff was nice and the place is just 2 mins away from the train station and car park.
Great value for the price, glad to find a lovely Japanese restaurant like this in Footscray!
Forgot to take the food photos (we were starving..) so just post the venue photos for this time. Will definitely come back.

We were very excited to try this all you can eat Japanese restaurant out because we love Okami and were surprised bbq was offered as an option. The decor and interior is very cute but is very impractical if you have a larger group than 4.

Food: most of the items on the menu are very good! The tofu, tempura and sushi are must haves. Great quality sushi to my surprise. Side dishes like seaweed salad come in very small portions. The bbq was an absolute failure. The coal was not hot enough too cool the meat and the meat itself was so this and broke a part making impossible to grill properly and did not taste nice either. Because of the coal it became super rubbery and dry. The cuts of meats are cheap because you arent paying a premium for them. You get what you pay for but honestly you should just eat the cooked food.

Service: service for our first set of order was great however we had a waitress who would take our order but didnt process it so the kitchen didnt receive orders from us. We constantly asked her and she kept saying good is coming but everyone who ordered after us received before us. Is was very dishonest. She then avoided us the the rest of the night and made the first waitress to serve us. It was very disappointing for us. Also, dont waste food. Theyll charge you $10 or more which isnt fair because you cant expect people to like everything…not everyone order recklessly sometimes they just dont like a particular dish.
