Id heard about this original cafe in Footscray, as it was the flagship store and they tried to expand into Richmond but that didnt work out.
This cafe was BIG inside w lots of cakes, Vietnamese rolls and pastries. Given the hype I chose a croissant and the lady kindly offered to hear it up for me.
The croissant was nice, but it had been coated in sugar water which I personally dont really like and it was quite doughy. So much so I couldnt finish it unfortunately, which is very unlike me hahaha
And Ive just realised that I forgot to take a pic of my croissant! Mmnn lol
But the service was lovely and very helpful and friendly.

A huge cafe located on the busy Barkly Street so it attracts many passers-by. Its a nice place to sit down and catch up with a coffee and some sweets. Theres a large selection of desserts to choose from which look very pretty. Weve sampled a few, all of which were very decent but nothing too special. They also serve banh mi, but Id suggest making your way down the road to the more traditional Vietnamese banh mi stores if thats what you want.
CONS
Partial review only as we left after seeing the state of the dining area and a significant amount of flies buzzing around the coffee table area we decided to sit at. It was odd considering there was no food around the table but was so disconcerting that we left before ordering. Always looks busy outside but i think the attraction here is moreso the outdoor area. cake selection LOOKED good but we decided the heed the warning signs buzzing around us and left.
FYI
I have shocked my husband many a time by the types of establishments i can eat food from (aus and o/s) so know that i wouldn’t write this review without just cause.
Nothing good to say about The French Baguette Cafe in Footscray.
Whilst it is located in a plum corner location, it just fails to impress.
We used to grab the odd coffee and croissant but unfortunately quality and service failed on our last visit and it was the last.
When I first came here 2-3 years ago, it was for the Asian rolls. – pro back then not right now. Stingy fillings and over priced these days
Then it switched to me going in for the assortment of cakes. It was okay back then; but now, I believe a childrens play dough cake may have more taste, and have a more fresh texture.
The YEAR old baclava doesnt do the place any justice either.
Then I started going there for the beef stew and bread rolls, because hey, we gotta support our local businesses no matter how crappy the place may be.
I went in yesterday, 3rd time Ive ever ordered the beef stew with bread rolls and low and behold the thing comes out 15 mins later, even though its a ready made dish in a bain Marie, the bowl its served in had a severe set of chips in the base, so the bowl kept tipping over like an uneven table and last but not least, had the longest, thickest grey hair Ive ever seen sitting on top like a garnish.
Called the waiter over, told me the hair is not a hair but an onion!!
Manager then came over, literally said ay ya ya scurried away and then ignored me while I stood at the counter.
Politely asked for my money back and walked out. The council should really look into how disgusting the place is. Theres more flies than people in the place, smeary smudgy cabinets, tables which havent seen disinfectant in at least a decade, week old dishes and fridges that arent turned on to keep drinks cool – just to display..
Dont waste your time here, its a trip to food poisoning land waiting to happen.
My first ever 1 star review!
I don’t know about the desserts or other mains but the baguettes here are excellent. Freshly sliced. Very fresh. Cheap price and they even warm them up in a toaster
