Hi! We previously ate at Ebony and Ivory for lunch and had a fantastic experience. On that occasion the service was great and the Massaman beef curry served with white rice was very enjoyable.
We decided to come back after such a positive experience but I’m honestly disappointed to write this average review from our dinner. We went on a Saturday night, we booked but didn’t need to, there were a few tables available. We had a table of four.
The restaurant it’s self is nice, warm ambiance and perfect on a cool night with the open fire going. Seating was good in the second seating area with bench seats and cushions which was comfortable. Background music playing but not too loud and there was space so we could easily have a conversation on the table with each other.
Service at the start was great and even though the waiter, a young guy didn’t know the wine list, he went and got some info from someone else, so that didn’t bother us too much.
The menu reads well (changed from what is listed here) and I was interested in trying a few items but we started with the chicken wings, pork and ginger dumplings and pumpkin sweetcorn fritters and a bowl of fries. The chicken wings were ok, I wouldn’t get them again now I have had them, the dumplings themselves were good and the fritters were crispy on the outside and tasty…. and that’s about it for entree’s.
For mains we had; house made linguine pasta with tiger prawns, cherry tomatoes, capers, parmesan and olive oil (pictured) it was a nice sized portion and you could tell the pasta was homemade, soft and creamy, prawns cooked nicely – well seasoned but the highlight of the dish were the cherry tomatoes, they were pockets of explosive flavor for the dish, happy to have this again. The seafood curry (pictured) looks great, it was a nice portion, tasty and the right mix of seafood accompanied with white rice. Steaks – eye filet served with potato rosti and cafe de Paris similar to a flavored butter, they both came out a little under what we asked but were still nice, nothing special that’s all.
Dessert, we took a look at the menu and the girls ordered one of each (all pictured); butter milk panacotta with strawberry jelly, gingerbread cheese cake with rhubarb and raspberry sorbet, sticky date pudding and the delicious chocolate dish. The panacotta was served in a glass and had too much gelatin causing it to be too firm and lacked flavor once you passed the strawberry jelly on top. The gingerbread cheese cake wasn’t a traditional slice of cake but almost deconstructed over the plate which was good, nice balanced combination of flavor which worked well. The sticky date pudding was the highlight – even if considered a stock standard and finally the chocolate delicious was interesting, presented really well and was best looked at. The chocolate pieces were like a mousse slice but quiet firm. It wasn’t an overly rich dish but the cream and sorbet added to balance it all out.
One bottle of red ($49 Shiraz) and three coffees, two of which came out incorrectly, $261.00.
A completely different experience compared to lunch but maybe we ordered incorrectly! The wait staff were both young and very inexperienced and by this I mean lack of knowledge on the wine list, taking plates as soon as you finished when they noticed them as they walked by and before others had finished and the coffee order was incorrect (note, he did offer to re-make them).
We used our Entertainment card on the bill, $25 off.
We still recommend, it wasn’t terrible but nothing special. We will go back again for at least one more try for sure.
Was here for a hens night Saturday and the soft shell crab is to die for. Friends just booked in tonight because I said its the best around ma gad
All too hard- lunch menu was limited, no gluten free marked on the menu, no specials at 1150am, kitchen could not tell waitress what the special were.
We left with out ordering
Enjoyable. We loved the feel and liked the venue. The breakfast was yummy and the coffee was good. The only downside was slow service but as we were not in a rush we didn’t mind. Happy to go back but would hope the floor staff are more attentive.
In Geelong for business and had the best lunch here. The freshly made pasta is fantastic. The potato gnocchi was to die for, so light and fluffy, literally the best I’ve ever tasted. An absolute gem!!
We loved it <3
Amazing!!. We had a wonderful lunch at Ebony and Ivory, the atmosphere and wait staff were so lovely. I had the Thai green curry chicken and it was great. My boyfriend had the tortellini and couldnt stop raving. The food was amazing and the bill only came to $35 for the 2 of us. Going back again this week!
