Came here before a game for dinner for a quick and healthy light feed before a lot of sweating and running.
Little did we know of the 45 minute wait that we would eventually be subject to in this seemingly little takeaway!
Our food came with much apologies. We were rewarded by absolutely delicious tempura beside the soba. Similarly, the breaded calamari, the crispy potato gem, the beef atop perfectly cooked rice, in the beef bento were delicious.
Good selection in the bento and excellent prawn tempura.
We came here as a last minute dinner takeaway plan (were talking about 1 minute before closing – yes we are one of those annoying customers) and they were friendly enough to take our orders. Kenji is a traditional Japanese restaurant thats hidden with shops on the streets of Camberwell.
They have a selection of Japanese dishes you can choose from and theyre quite inexpensive as well. Theres also a sushi roll selection if you want to quickly grab to go. We ordered the Philadelphia roll, the soft shell crab roll and the chirashi don.
The Philadelphia was really nice. I liked how fresh the salmon was and the creaminess off the Philadelphia. The soft shell crab had a bit of a kick to it. If youre not a fan of a little spice, I wouldnt recommend this. I really liked the soft shell crab. It was nice and crunchy.
This was my first time eating chirashi don. Ive always steered away from ordering plain and simple salmon chirashi don because I feel like its a pile of rice and a couple of slices of salmon on top of it – and that for some reason just doesnt excite me (even tho a nigiri is pretty much that, it appeals to me a lot more, weird, does anyone feel the same?). Anyways, the chirashi don was nice, not going to lie but it just bored me. There was only soy sauce but I was expecting some sort of sauce or something more flavourful. I dont know. But dont get me wrong, its still delicious and the salmon itself is highlighted beautifully.
Overall, good place to go for some cheap eats.
Been here quite a few times and it has never failed to satisfy! Gets rather busy during the week at lunch times so get there early! I love looking at their photo wall and seeing what new local celebrity has dined here!
My friend took me to this family run Japanese restaurant. The place is very cozy and have family friendly vibe. We ordered 4 bentos. Because its Friday night the food took forever to arrive and it was very hard to get the waitress’s attention. Lucky we were in no rush and enjoyed our conversation. I had the Unagi bento and it was lovely! There were lots of different variety in the box, tempura, seaweed, salad, soup etc. A good combination!
