Had a pleasant meal at this popular East Malvern restaurant. A broad South East Asian menu is on offer. My table of three chose three entrees. First a delicious prawn & avocado canape served on a crisp open wonton skin. It had a wonderful zing, spice & crunch. The prawns were large & juicy. Next was San Chow Bow, a lettuce cup filled with minced chicken, prawn, mushroom & water chestnut served with hoisin sauce. This was my least favourite of the entrees as the filling was predominantly chicken while the other ingredients were lost & indiscernible. The sauce did nothing the lift it. Finally we had the curry puffs filled with pumpkin, sweet potato & other vegies with a delicious light curry flavouring. A light sweetish sauce was offered but wasnt necessary as they had enough good flavour to stand alone. For main we tried the Kelantanese Malay salad which was very much like Thai papaya salad. Fat juicy prawns, shredded fruit & herbs made a delicious tangy light meal redolent with hot, sour & sweet flavours. Seriously good. Next was a mixed seafood stirfry with ginger & greens. It looked rather bland & pallid when it arrived at the table, however, the generous quantity of prawns, scallops & white fish was very fresh, tasty & light. The ginger was the dominant flavour but not over powering. Finally we had the sesame crusted duck. A really generous serve of moist, beautifully cooked boned duck with a mostly crisp sesame crust. It would have been for me a stand out dish but the sweet, vinegary sauce it was topped with got rather sickly sweet after a few mouthfuls. Even having steamed rice with it did nothing to relieve the rich sweetness. Overall the food was excellent. Service prompt & attentive. The upstairs dining room with black walls was tastefully decorated. Will return to try more of the interesting menu.
