Never knew this place existed. Upstairs is a spacious restaurant dedicated to Uyghur cuisine, I’m talking about hand pulled noodles, pilaf, nang bread, and lots and lots of lamb. This was going to be a hearty meal.
While we were waiting the owners sat some children to a kid’s TV show, playing all sorts of melodies including baby shark. Dear Lord.
Our first dish came, handmade noodles with lamb and vegetables (Kuruk Koruma Chop). Very good, noodles were thick and chewy in a mild tomato based sauce. The liberal use of coriander and sesame seeds made it very aromatic. You can also get plain noodles and match it with other saucy shared plates, recommended for large groups.
Next was lamb with nang bread (Tawa Kawap). Lamb was mindblowingly tender, fatty and heavy. The sauce was soaking into the dry nang bread and was a spongy delicious mess.
You can’t go to a Uyghur restaurant and not order some lamb skewers and at $2.00 a pop, why not. If you are lucky you’ll get some fatty pieces which are full of delicious flavour. A word of warning, their dry chilli powder is very spicy and definitely lingers in your mouth. Their Uyghur yoghurt is a favourite of customers and can help with the pain. Luckily we got a wood ear mushroom cold plate (Soghuk Kerinkulak) which was cooling and vinegary.
So you ask, great food but why a 3.0? The progression of the meal was all wrong and in between dishes there was a considerable wait. It was in sequence as I’ve explained in this review, one by one. My guess is that they are not equipped to handle that many customers (it was half full). If you are sharing some large plates like many people were you might not encounter this problem.
