Saw them initially on Melbourne CS and kept ordering really delicious sea urchin and explosive Uni rice (explosive as in a lot so it virtually explodes out of the bowl)

Today we finally made it to the place for a visit. The warehouse style place is not really a restaurant as such but about 4 tables which seats about 16 at most so you have to book. We ordered the ootoro Uni Don (fatty tuna belly), eel Uni Don, A Grade White Sea urchin sashimi, Sea urchin omelette, fish roe sushi and a birds nest ice milk tea.

Everything was super fresh and delicious, although I would expect a better environment because of the price point (we had $190 worth of food!). Nevertheless the seating was quite comfortable and the staff was very friendly and accommodating.

Uni Boom is currently situated a small retail space within the showroom of an exporter of Australian bird’s nest and Tasmanian uni (sea urchin).
I was a bit hesitant because the frontage was quite factory-like and didn’t actually say Uni Boom, but I was persistent.
The menu features a range of rice bowls (don), that are loaded with seafood.
*Salmon don $45 – thick cut salmon (albeit not expertly cut) was high quality, however I feel it wasn’t the best value.
    * Mini Uni Boom don $25 – great value to sample the delicious uni. It’s creamy and slightly briny and is extra rich with the raw quail eggs provided.
*Peach gum milk tea ($9) – interesting texure from the gum of a peach tea (I’m told), it’s like a soft jelly sitting at the bottom of peach tea.
Quite a good find, as I haven’t seen these uni bowls in Melbourne before and is something I miss from my travels in Japan.

A quite interesting store I would say, rather than a restaurant its more like a tasting Centre. The store is not obviously located on street, in fact, if you dont look close, you are not going to find it. The food is quite pricy, yet definitely not overpriced.

When it comes to the seafood, freshness and parts of seafood is main marking points. This seafood doesnt just satisfied my stomach but my tongue as well. You can tell the all these sashimi and urchins are the top quality parts from the original materials. The texture with thick cut salmon sashimi is a bouncing softness, while the urchins are smooth as silk. All these ingredients are having different tastes of their own, and when they combined to a dish, that steamed rice with spice gives the link to all ingredients, making the taste to reach another level.

With the bird nest drink, I didnt find it really interesting. It was well made as a Hong Kong styled milk tea, however, the taste itself has nothing different from a normal milk tea. Its just not standing out of a basic milk tea.

I would definitely visit again, just to give other dishes a taste.

We were lucky to be invited to Uni Boom Boom both a wholesaler of fancy seafood such as Sea urchin (uni), Abalone, Salmon sashimi, Otoro and even Bird’s Nest.

Food: We had the Salmon Don, Otoro Uni Don and Uni cup. At a steep price of $45 per rice bowl, it is definitely worth the money for the quality. The NZ king salmon was super fresh with about 8 pieces together with salmon roe. The Otoro Don was to die for! It was super fresh and melted in my mouth just like japan with the freshest uni I’ve ever had in Melbourne. The uni cup was a simple rice ball topped with 2 pieces of fresh uni (great taster for those who are not ready for a whole bowl.

With a small restaurant inside and a small courtyard outside. It is definitely not a fancy place. The restaurant was dark and the shop is located in a warehouse. I would be great to see this place brighten up and have a nicer restaurant to complement the fine food.

Price: 4/5 for quality. Probably not an everyday or every week treat
    Food: 5/5
    Atmosphere:3/5

Fresh sea urchin, very creamy; however seasoning in classic uni don is a bit too overpowering.
They put furikake, roasted sesame sauce and ume plum sauce in the dim, plus the seaweed salad is already seasoned, too much flavouring takes away the freshness of the sea urchin.
Friends had otoro and there is white hard to chew bits in it, not as melt in your mouth as expected. Being very critical because of the price.
Downsides: unattractive ambiance, slow service (asked 3 times for a water glass, glass is extremely dirty) however staff were very polite.
