Fairly empty on a Friday night which was good for me as I was hungry as. Food came out promptly as expected, except that the hot noodle soup came out before the cold noodle which was rather weird.
The beef noodle soup was very oily, and the beef slices were of a poor cut, but the noodles were silky smooth and had a nice chewiness to it. The spicy cold noodles were of the same calibre, and was luckily way less oiler.
The grilled fish with fermented black beans was quite a generous serve, and cooked well. The skin was crispy while the flesh remained soft. If you like the salty and pungent flavours of fermented black beans, you will enjoy this dish, otherwise it can be quite one-dimensional. The accompanying ingredients didn’t do much to elevate the taste in any way, and just acted to provide different elements of texture.
Pleasant service. Good option for a no-frills meal.
Its hard to tell which places are shut on New Years Day without calling prior or making the drive down, so we decided to take a stab in the dark by heading down to Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn. Given the amount of restaurants in that area, surely something must be open right? Right, and quite a few too with this place being one of them.
Ordering off their lunch specials, we got the Spicy Pork Belly with Rice, Sichuan Hot Chilli Oil & Fish Fillet with Rice and (of course) a portion of Boiled Prawn Wontons in Superior Stock.
The pork belly slices were not only scarce and bulked up with a heap load of capsicums and onions, but they were also dry, and the amount oil sitting at the bottom of the pile was enough to grease at least two squeaky doors!
The fish fillets dampened the experience further as they were so salty that another few more serves of this and our blood pressures would be shooting off the roof! Struggling even with an ammo of rice on hand, we eventually finished it because we were hungry, but not without having to take gulps of tea in between.
Our prawn wontons arrived after we finished our mains and much to our relief, they actually didnt taste too bad although there was oddly more pork than prawns in them in spite of the name. Regardless, they did little to cushion our despair.
Anyhow, I ended up spending the first day of 2019 doing some wicked capsicum and onion burps all day! Needless to say I made no new friends that day.
