Rude man running the shop. Over priced food, convinetly placed phone booth out the front incase your phone is out of battery and you need to make a quick escape. Definitely would suggest going somewhere where you will feel better about spending your money!!
Dropped into this place whilst visiting Hawthorn for a quick coffee and bite to eat. The coffee was OK, but the food and (particularly) the service wasn’t. Ordered the Egg and Bacon Hash and the whole thing looked like it had literally been thrown on the plate . The poached egg was already split when I received the dish and there was a piece of barely melted, processed cheese slice sitting on top, which I had to remove. The hollandaise sauce was watery and tasteless – luckily I’d asked for it on the side. The meal tasted OK but definitely not something I would order again.
If I was just rating this experience based on the food and coffee, then I would give the food a 2 and the coffee a 3 out of 5; however, what topped it off for me was the owner’s attitude. When I walked in I found him to be a bit brash, but that’s OK. However, as I sat in the cafe he was loud and swearing. When I went to pay I produced my Entertainment Book voucher (which is how I found him in the first place) and he gave a snide remark about me using it. I presented him with my phone and he grabbed it off me, which wasn’t great but again, OK. But after redeeming the e-voucher he then proceeded to give himself 5 stars in the Entertainment Book review and submitted it on my behalf! Already not happy that he’d done that, I then questioned why he was charging me 50 cents, on a meal that cost $16, for using a Visa card. He then pointed to a small picture of Gordon Ramsey on the front of his till where he’d written in small biro print that there’s a 50 cent surcharge. Honestly, these kinds of surcharges annoy me anyway, but I hate it more when I’m not told about them and they’re just added on (and a small sticker on the till isn’t ‘informing’ the customer).
Overall, the behaviour of the owner and the food itself is way below par. Ironically, he has a picture of Gordon Ramsey on his till, but the truth is he could easily be in one of Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmare shows… Save your money and your appetite for one of the more friendlier and delicious cafes Hawthorn has to offer.
I visited Huckleberry today and experienced extremely rude service by who I assume to be the owner. The coffee was okay, but hardly makes up for the poor service. Very unhappy with how I was treated here.
Really just an ok place. It’s kind of cute and the serving staff are nice, but the menu doesn’t inspire and the coffee really isn’t that great. I had the mushroom bruschetta – which was really just a missmash of mushrooms, oily spinach, giant bacon hunks and a poached egg on toast – and found it really oily, to the point of making me a little queasy. My husband had the breakfast burrito, which was edible but bland and also slightly oily. We might have just picked badly, however, wouldn’t rush back none the less.
