We were invited to Not just a pretty face on Saturday and Im pleased to report the name is well earned. A brand new opening specialising in British inspired brunch fare their menu boasts English classics including bubble and squeak and Cumberland sausages.
Given this I couldnt resist trying the English take on French toast which had a bread and butter pudding base. This presented well and the roasted rhubarb really freshened it up. Paired with a thoroughly delicious chai and I was very pleased indeed.
My husband had the tamari mushroom dish and we also tried the porridge with apple pie compote and maple Greek yoghurt. This would have to win the award for most attractive porridge dish Ive ever seen and it was extremely tasty to boot. The cakes also looked amazing, both the in house made and those supplied by Nine. I believe the chef used to sell baked goods at markets so had we not been so full we definitely would have tried some of the tempting treats.
I also really liked the little touches here, the takeaway coffee cups are compostable, the eggs are proudly free range, there were fresh herbs in the water bottle straight from a staff members garden- these things are really important and places that make the effort are the ones people want to go back to and support, especially when the food is so good!

Not Just A Pretty Face is located on Auburn Road in Hawthorn. A lovely little cafe with seating inside & as well as outside on the street, theyve only been open for a few months but they are definitely not just a pretty face.
With a British influenced menu, we visited on the first day of a new menu. We started with an iced latte & a matcha milkshake & ordered a few dishes to share. The iced coffee was sensational & my friend loved her shake.
The corn 3 ways was a gorgeous dish, beautifully presented & absolutely delicious. The chilli, lime & corn fritters were served with charred corn, corn custard, pea mole & a poached egg. We loved the flavours in this dish & pretty much demolished it.
The smoked trout dish with urid dahl, coconut & lime relish came with a big smear of minted pea cream & crispy fried eggs. Such a unique & creative dish & it tasted divine. A real standout savoury brunch dish & we loved the plating.
We finished with the rose water roasted peaches, saffron cheesecake mousse, coconut & pistachio granola with a pistachio crumb. This dish was stunning & tasted even better, one of my favourite sweet brunch dishes of the year. I will go back to have this dish again (and not share this time)
The service was fast & friendly & I really loved the beautifully presented dishes that were both unique & tasted incredible. Not Just a Pretty Face is a little gem of a cafe that Id highly recommend checking out for yourself. Thanks so much for having us.
Not Just a Pretty Face is an extremely homely and cozy little cafe. The service is very hands off and the staff are delightful! This cafe is also a vegetarian paradise! I loved the number of vego options I could choose from!

Long Black- great coffee! Strong and easy to drink.
Chocolate Milkshake- wasn’t my favourite. I think it could have been less milky and slightly more chocolatey.

Baked eggs- absolutely delicious! Really really loved it! Would recommend this dish.
Strawberries cranachan- amazing panacotta. Super creamy and extremely tasty. The combination of all the elements on the plate was simply great! Also loved the presentation!
Chargrilled Asparagus dish- very healthy and filling plate. Try it yourself to know.
Overall, I had a wonderful experience at Not Just a Pretty Face.
Absolutely tiny cafe with very minimal seating inside. Service was a little slow but the food was really delicious. I went for the corn fritters with a side of bacon. A really tasty and clever spin on the standard fritters dish.
