We had a great little breakkie here. Saturday morning and not busy, the restaurant serves up a nice breezy ambience. The food was very nice- i can recommend the big breakkie, which was served in a cast iron pan with all the ingredients arranged neatly within. A definite thumbs up!
Quietly tucked away at the corner of Glenferrie Rd and Burwood Rd, this little cafe may surprise you. Friendly service, excellent food, and reasonably priced. I often go for their roasted veggie salads. Their lunch menu is petit but equally delicious. I’ve tried their gnocchi and pork belly…
Quick service. Great food. Had tea and buckwheat pancake with coconut flakes and fruits & chia seeds – yummy!! Friends had cheese omelette and bread – which was DELISH as well. By the way, their orange marmalade is totally awesome. Big points for great service and good music!!
The coffee is great, and our lunch meal (couscous, salads etc for a herd of vegetarians) was quite pleasing, given there is no specific Vegie catering.
Have wanted to try Second Empire for a while so went for breakfast. We needed something quick and easy as we were in a rush so ordered coffees and bacon and eggs. Coffee slightly bitter and just luke warm. Bacon was rubbery and dry and had clearly been left to sit and was reheated. Scrambled eggs were peppery and unpleasantly overcooked. Side tomato was tasteless and suggested low grade produce used. Service very slow considering it was nearly empty. My partner left his food it was that inedible. What are these people doing? How can you stuff up bacon and eggs??? Needless to say we won’t be back!
5 gnocchi balls the size of a nugget is not a meal.. Second empire a quiet cafe in hawthorn looked like the perfect place for a nice lunch. With a menu holding only 5 dishes for lunch, I was looking forward to a dish focused on by the kitchen. While my boyfriend got the middle eastern spices beef burger ($18.50) I went for the gnocchi (also $18.5) as I felt like something hearty and warm. Well when our dishes came out, there was nothing hearty about the dish, because it was barely a dish. While my boyfriend got a large burger and a side of chips, I got 5 nugget sized gnocchi pieces and some pea pure. It tasty but did not fill anything, it was not hearty, and was not worth the price. Next time I’ll just stick to a burger.
