After an amazing annual wine tasting at Jasper Hill the four of us decided to have lunch nearby. We ventured up the road to this quaint cottage along a dirt track instead of going in the main town of Heathcote. The produce purchased from this store is organic and excellent. However, we were not so hungry and decided to share 2 main meals. The favourite was not available – Lamb Tangine.
First to arrive was the pork schnitzel – it looked enormous and more than adequate for 2 to share. Unfortunately It missed the crispiness and it was tough – a little disappointing.
Next to arrive was the mushroom ragu with the semolina gnocchi. I think I counted 6 small square gnocchi. My mother used to call it polenta made with semolina. It needed much more gnocchi or polenta to soak up the ragu. And the ragu had way too much tomato concentrate which spoilt the taste of the mushrooms or fresh tomatoes. It was too acidic and I would have served a ragu with soft polenta and put only 1/3 of the tomato concentrate. Pity, it missed the mark. We were all disappointed and could only give it a 2 at most.
