This place just opened in the Woolworths building next to Woolworths in Highett. It is a small shop with some seating space but does mainly takeaway Japanese sushi and other food. The sushi is beautifully presented and very reasonably priced. There is variety in the food too with inari (beancurd pockets), sushi rolls, nigiris, onigiris (rice balls), fried food and curry katsudon. I got the salmon, scallop and eel nigiris as takeaway for $8.80 – they had been blow torched on top and had a smokey flavour. They also had been coated in a sticky sweet teriyaki tasting sauce. It was delicious. The sushi was much colder than what I would have liked but that cannot be helped as they have to keep it at a certain temperature as it is not made to order. Even being cold the rice in the sushi was not hard at all and still had a great texture. I also got a chicken onigiri for $3. The way the packaging works is that there is a layer of plastic which separates the seaweed from the rice and you take the plastic out only when you want to eat it so that the seaweed is fresh and not soggy. As a result the seaweed was super crunchy and the onigiri was very enjoyable to eat. There was a chicken teriyaki filling in it which was savoury, sweet and tender. Don’t expect a generous filling of chicken because onigiri is traditionally made with lots of rice and a little filling. I will return to try other things next time!
