Sadly the owners seem to have changed here. It used to be a great place for a coffee and a sweet treat. The last couple of visits it’s taken a really long time for staff to acknowledge me standing at the counter. This would be understandable if they were busy but it’s been very quiet. Today they were occupied chatting on their mobile phone instead of being aware of customers. The coffee was flavorless and very weak. The pastry was sickly sweet and lacked Benjamin’s usual skill. I’ll try them again in a couple of months hopefully things will be back on track then.
We had some friends over for dinner on Australia Day so I decided to visit Benjamins to pick up some sweet treats having discovered the bakery on Instagram. Perhaps its a function of there being three stores for one Instagram account (Ivanhoe, Albert Park, Elsternwick) and therefore maybe some of the photos Id seen which set my expectations were from another store, but Id assumed going to the original bakery was a safe bet. Unfortunately what I stumbled on was quite a limited range of options and bizarrely a whole heap of Christmas tree gingerbread and mince tarts, one month post Xmas. Where were the highly lauded wagon wheels and donuts?
I ended up getting a variety of small cakes which the staff very helpfully assisted to select. They looked good but they didnt taste as good as they looked. Lemon meringue which is usually one of my favourite desserts was almost sickly sweet and lacked any of the tartness that should come with a citrus based cake. The chocolate one was visually impressive and had a pleasant texture but was none too memorable. The cheesecake was flavourless.
Ive today heard that the original owner is no longer affiliated with this bakery and I wonder if that has compromised the taste as this did not really measure up to my expectations. The lovely staff were the highlight
