Kensington is a suburb I have seldom ventured to so was excited Mr Piccolo tonight with our catch up with friends. We arrived at 6:30 and there was already a crowd happening, maybe due to the nightly happy hour that would encourage people in before 6. We started with wine for most of the table opting for the seldom tried montepulciano which I quite enjoyed.
We had a selection of entrees for to start with and I got to try the arancini balls, bruschetta tacos and the calamari. My favourites were the arancini which were deliciously cheesy. I also liked the calamari which was quite zesty and was heavy on the salt so glad to have shared this dish.
For mains I shared the mixed meat platter which indicated it was suitable for two. We had made some modifications to this dish as my platter partner was not a consumer of pork so we swapped out pork chipolata and the chivapi sausages. Im not sure if they simply removed these elements without replacing with more of the stuff she could eat but it meant that the platter wasnt particularly substantial. For the $48 price tag I would have expected a lot more than 4 small lamb skewers, some grilled chicken thigh and relatively small slices up eye fillet plus a few wedges and a bit of presentation salad. The meat we had was tasty but just nowhere near enough to feed two.
My wife ate the seafood risotto from the specials menu and from what I tried this was a flavour packed dish with generous quantities of seafood. She was raving even after we left the restaurant.
For dessert we shared the chocolate plate which consisted of chocolate mousse, mud cake and brownie and was a wonderful way to finish the night.
Overall except for the portion size on my shared main I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Mr Piccolos
Staff were very helpful and good at making recommendations and in dealing with questions around dietary requirements. They also seemed more than willing to adjust their dishes to suit as well which was nice to see.
We had dinner with friends at Mr Piccolo last night, an Italian style restaurant a few minutes walk from Kensington station. I started with a gin based cocktail which was nice and refreshing while the rest of the table opted for red, white or sparkling. The staff here were very accomodating to dietary requirements and any required tweaks to dishes which was appreciated.
Our entree were comprised of the calamari, bruschetta tacos and pumpkin arancini balls. I really enjoyed the tender calamari although others remarked it was overly salty. The taco was also very tasty and an interesting idea as an entree particularly at a restaurant with a European menu.
For mains I shared the meat platter for two. Fortunately I had eaten a substantial snack before dinner as this was definitely not a generous dish. The word platter tends to conjure up visions of sizeable portions but I easily could have eaten this solo thats how insufficient it was for sharing. The plate had 6 wedges on it, 4 pieces of meat each and some salad that I considered more of a garnish then anything else.
My husband got the gnocchi which had almost been my choice and Im supremely glad it wasnt as it was so unbelievably overcooked it was almost like mashed potato. Desserts faired better and the six of us opted for three chocolate plates to share. This included a brownie, chocolate cake and chocolate mousse. The menu described it as a mocha mousse but there was not even remotely a hint of coffee detected.
Overall pretty hit and miss
