Will be back for:
+ Miso Soup
+ Japanese Hamburger Steak
What a gem of a place. Came by for a quick bite and was delighted by the flavours of the dishes. The miso was packed full of goodness and a generous serving. The Japanese Steak was as advertised; tender, juicy, loads of flavour, with a slight tang. Delicious. Couldnt be happier with the service and the food. The great thing is that theres nothing like this in this stretch of shops so expect this place to do well with the locals.
My score 3.5 stars. J & I had lunch at W yesterday. Casual setting, nice jazz in the background – a bit cramped at the front (tables for 2 are fairly small), more room at the back. Place wasnt busy – female waiter was nice & polite. Food > Miso soup was mild, but very good we enjoyed the soft carrot, onion & eggplant pieces. J also enjoyed the spring onion greens, but I thought they were strangely too coarse/hard, so distracted from the soothing texture of the rest of the soup. Overall though, one of the better miso soups Ive had. Js Tofu Don had 2 very generous sized pieces of silken tofu & plenty of (very) sweet teriyaki sauce (slightly caramelised on the top of the tofu). It had plenty of rice & really nice pickled ginger, but J thought it didnt have anywhere near enough salad greens, The Tofu Don & Miso soup lunch deal at $9.50 is great value though! My Teriyaki chicken had plenty of rice, but also only a small amount of salad greens. For someone who doesnt eat a lot of meat, there was plenty of moist chicken, sauce glaze & occasionally a yummy crispy bit of skin or edge (I wanted more of this crunch for its texture contrast & intensity of flavour). The poached egg yolk was (barely) partially cooked & the white virtually uncooked, so I folded it through the hot rice & it made a nice sauce. Were matchaophiles, so finished off sharing 1 generous scoop of Matcha ice cream sooooo intense, but very sweet. Still – a bargain, & if they cut back the sugar it would be top notch. May have to come back & try something else on the menu, just to have a miso soup & ice cream again!
Quaint little Japanese restaurant in Flemo.
Service was average, borderline slow. Venue was great and decor was unique.
Ordered takoyaki and chicken teriyaki with rice.
Chicken teriyaki had a great flavour but portion was small.
Overall, would come back to try other dishes
