We were scrolling in the food court in Chadstone and we came across Little White Duck. Ive never heard of it or even knew it existed however what caught my attention when I was walking past was the menu. The pictures in the menu looked soooooooooo delicious and mouth watering, why not give it a go! We were seated immediately!
Little White Duck serves Chinese cuisine with a modern twist. They have some interesting dishes that involve a whole coconut and their plating can range from cute little bento like boxes and instead of a stand of cakes for high tea, there was a tower of Chinese food on a stand.
We ordered the shiu mai, Peking duck wraps – really wanted to try out what their known for, different color har gow, egg tart, cold Sichuan noodle and xiao long bao.
So the first negative thing about this place is that they have no timing when theyre bringing out dishes. I mean I ordered everything in one go but why bring out the egg tart first, when the egg tart is a dessert dish? I didnt think I had to tell someone to leave it till last, because working in a restaurant, thats pretty much common sense. Anyways, I had to leave the egg tart aside for later, which is a shame because it was freshly made and warm.
The Sichuan noodles came out straight after. The noodles were firm however instead of making the sauce have bold flavours it was really lacking. The noodles tasted like it was drenched in chilli oil. I wasnt a fan of this dish at all.
The next dish were the shiu mai. I thought this shiu mai was below average because it didnt have that intense shiu mai flavour you would find if you ate it at Shark Fin or Gold leaf. It was sooo subtle in flavour and I felt like it was really hard as well. I really didnt enjoy this one was much as I hope I would.
The color har gaws are so cute! It came in squid ink, pumpkin, spinach, original and beetroot. I really liked the flavours of the spinach and squid ink however the skin of the dumpling was really mushy and didnt feel right. I also felt like the original hargaw was lacking in depths of flavour as well.
I was looking the most forward to the the xiao long bao! Unfortunately, these were a let down. There wasnt much soup in them and the meat itself was quite dry and bland. Theres a lot better ones out there (talking about you, Shanghai Street Dumplings).
Their Peking duck wraps were quite expensive. $17 or so for 4 small pieces. The duck was really chunky and dry. They used so much sauce and it was super super salty! I have to give this one a past.
Last but not least, the egg tart! Honestly, it looked amazing. The egg tart was glistening the whole time whilst sitting there waiting for it to be eaten. Im actually so sad because I thought it would be the best egg tart Ive ever had but it was probably my least favourite, in terms of flavour. WHY? I couldnt even taste the egg tart. It was sooooo subtle. There was no distinct taste that an egg tart should have. I loved the texture and the pastry they used but wheres the flavour at??
Overall, this place has no customer service. I mean they give you Xiao long bao without a spoon until you ask for one and no one gives you water until you have to ask. Tbh, this place could have such good potential if they worked on their flavours because its really really truly lacking.
The menu is tempting, the environment is new and clean, price at Chadstone SC is reckon as reasonable, just the food arent really surprising or outstanding.
Its been our third time to the restaurant, the first time was when it was newly opened, everything was great! The second time we went for dinner, it was nice. Tonight we went for dinner again and ordered the pineapple rice as the last visit. Same as few other people have commented, the dish isnt hot, just warm, plus there are only 1-2 tiny pineapples for the whole dish. Should it be called Pineapple fried rice simply by serving in a pineapple shell? We told one of the staff and she just saying she has no idea, no reporting to the manager or apologize, nothing, she just took the other dish we have finished and left.
Fair to be told, the staff are hardworking and keen on serving, but sometimes they are just too keen on serving, especially in taking away our empty dish, even while no one waiting for a table. This happened both the time we visited, the staff asked for taking away my empty dish while my last scoop of food still in the mouth. Lol, do they lack of dishes to serve? In other point of view they are just highly efficient.
