Best xiao long bao in Chadstone, the skin were thin with lots of soup inside, the truffle xiao long bao were full of favor. Also ordered drunken chicken, braised beef noodles, stir fry Peking pork with steam bun, all were very yum. Sure a place will be back for more.

DO: The truffle XLB, xo rice, Pan fried dumplings and chicken ribs.

DON’T: Forget the fried calamari and salted egg yolk prawns.

TIP: Very busy, go early or late. Expect lines

As Shanghai Red opens its doors, I knew I just needed to try what they had to offer. Their menu is a mix of Shanghai and Shinchuan dishes with an authentic interior ambiance. Inside appeared a bit chaotic; noisy, cramped and all the rush from the kitchen can be seen at the dining tables. Food was average; we noticed bits of plastic container in our gluten rice, it’s an honest mistake but the rice had the texture of a frozen then over steamed dish. The wonton meat was the same as the steamed xiao long bao but I would recommend the fried buns. The flavours of the sweet marinate was (to me) too sweet and lacks traditional flavours. Staff were well accommodating to customers; they seem to action things quickly in a friendly manner.

Overall, food (to me) is average but not close to traditional Shanghai food. The environment is very cramped and noisy. It’s more likely a place for a quick and casual meal.

Newly opened Chinese restaurant focused on Shanghainese style cuisine, and as I have spent most of my childhood in Shanghai, I decided to check out the authenticity of the food. From the get go there was already a line, we waited about half an hour before getting a table. Although the outside dining area was completely unoccupied, when the staff was asked why, she simply said it is not open to public. The place looks traditional enough to draw attention, and had the typical Chinese restaurant feel. But it was certainly NOT worth the wait.

As seen in most Chinese restaurants, the service staff dashed back and forth trying to serve customers, everything felt so rushed, so one would not expect the same level of service as you get from a 5 star restaurant. We ordered the Xiaolongbao, soup Bao, salty egg coated prawn and vegie mix claypot. I could judge the restaurant as a whole by tasting the xiaolongbao alone, as this is seen as the signature Shanghainese dish. We had the original and the crab Xiaolongbao, none of those fancy coloured ones as we wanted to stick to the basics. The skin was very thin which was a good sign, and it had plenty of soup inside, also a good sign. But the taste was rather disappointing, it wasn’t bad, just mediocre, certainly not on par with some of the other Shanghainese restaurants I have tried around Melbourne (New Shanghai, Kitchen Republik in Boxhill). I could barely taste the crab flavour. The soup bao came with a straw, and you are meant to drink the soup with it, once again it was disappointing as there was barely any crab flavour.

What made the experience worse was the fact that the waiters kept coming to collect the dishes, when we clearly have not finished, clearly trying to hurry their customers along, so they can get ready for the next batch. You certainly would not expect this level of service in a restaurant that charges 30 dollars for a main dish. So we quickly finished and paid the bill, after 5 minutes of sitting there with the table empty wanting to go so they can cater for the next group, no one came back to give us the change or receipt! We had to go to the front and ask for it, and apparently they completely forgot about us and the change! Lucky it was an insignificant amount and we left without asking.

Overall would not go back again and way too pricey for the level of service and food quality.

Shanghai Red launches with bomb xiaolongbao!

You cant walk past and not notice the impressively designed Chinese restaurant, complete with a dumpling making theatre window.
Follow your senses (and your gut) and go for a steaming basket of xiao long bao – or five.

These soup dumplings are expertly hand-rolled and delicately folded, enclosing the pork mince and gelatinised soup.
When steamed, everything relaxes the thin skin becomes elastic, the soup magically appears and it becomes a little bomb of flavour.
I like to let them cool slightly and eat the whole thing in one go all the juices explode inside your mouth. Or you could do it the traditional way bite a little hole off the top, suck out the juice, then dip the rest in the ginger soy sauce.
The black truffle xlb have a slight edge of earthy, truffley flavour and works incredibly well with pork. The soup isnt overly gelatinous either, its light, almost like a chicken & pork stock.

Braised wheat gluten with mushroom (Hong Shai Kao Fu) Traditional Shanghai cold appetiser. SR do this dish pretty well, there are some good textures going on with the spongey gluten and jiggly but crunchy wood-ear mushroom. Its braised in a dark and light soy, so it has an earthy, salty, and slightly sweet ring to the sauce. Give it a go, its delicious.

Shanghai Fried Noodles (Shanghai Cu Chai Mien) classic combo with dumplings. The noodles are thick and have a nice chew (not as chewy as udon), and the sauce is very moreish, again with a soy blend and xiaoxing wine. There are also crunchy stems of baby choy sum, slices of pork and juicy shiitake mushrooms. Its an excellent dish!

Atmosphere – The owners have spared no expense in recreating the feeling of old Shanghai, at a time when Western influences started coming in. The high ceilings feature decorated architraves, dark wooden frames outline the stone-tiled walls, and even the flooring is cobble stoned. Classy lanterns and red hues light the room and highlight a feature portrait of an young Shanghainese lady in the early 1900s. Beyond this, youd have to use your imagination, because it can get very busy and loud, with an open kitchen and bustling dining hall.

Service – Being a fresh team, the service staff need a bit of time to find their confidence and structure, but under the guidance of experienced managers, this shouldnt take long at all. They certainly look like a team, with very recognisable uniforms.

Shanghai Red brings a bit of class and quality to this side of Chadstone, and certainly gives a couple rival restaurants that come to mind a run for their money.

Th is a new restaurant serving some good Chinese food.

I went to the launch of Shanghai Red during the week. It was a fun affair with lots of food, entertainment and some red carpet lol

The food consisted of dumplings e.g. kangaroo which were really tasty, noodles, tofu, and some crumbed prawns which absolutely delicious and other tasty morsels.

It was a good night overall, w some really friendly staff. I’m sure this will be a welcomed addition to the chaddie shopping centre.

New Shanghai restaurant at Chadstone Shopping Centre. Chaddy really need more restaurants.

The food is awesome. We ordered XLB, fried beef dumplings, salt and pepper prawns and lava custard dessert.

The XLB has really thin skin which is a good sign of a proper Xiao Long Bao. Lots of soup and comes with side dish of ginger slices just like Din Tai Fung in Asia.

Beef dumplings has a crispy underside and they are tasty.

The salt and pepper prawns are huge and there are plenty on the plate.

Lastly the dessert is good too. Love how fresh is the skin texture.

Overall food is awesome. Service top notch and the ambience is like old Shanghai.

Keep up to good work and please maintain consistency.

This new joint is heaps better than New Shanghai.
Find out from my review why – New Shanghai is not up to par with food and service.
