I was quite pleased to have a new Vietnamese restaurant within 5 min walk from home, so I was eager to try this new eatery. I love the freshness & clean flavours of Vietnamese cuisine. The place had been opened for only a couple of weeks. My dining companion & I arrived early on a Friday evening. There were already a couple of tables occupied. We were warmly greeted by a lady at the counter and were seated at a table. Before long we had our menus & bottle of chilled tap water. Our young waiter arrived to take our order. We each ordered a serve spring rolls as an entree & a main noodle dish each. I asked for a substitution which was happily accommodated. By this time the restaurant had filled up with diners. The waiter seemed to be flitting from table trying to keep up. There didnt appear to be anyone else waiting on tables. After a bit of a wait & noting tables that arrived after us were already being served food, I started losing my patience. Finally my friends main meal arrived and it was not what was ordered – totally different. Sent back, we then had to reconfirm both our orders. Normally we would have appreciated our entrees before mains… but soon my main arrived, exactly as I had ordered it with the substitution but with out the fish sauce dressing that normally accompanies this dish. The waiter said he would return with it but soon began flitting from table to table again. I had to turn & ask the lady at the counter for it. It soon arrived but it appeared to be watered down fish sauce with out the garnishes & not enough to moisten the dry noodles. There seemed to be a lot of noise & loud talking/yelling coming from the kitchen which was annoying & unsettling. Still no food for my friend at this stage but my spring roll entree arrived. My patience worn thin at this point, I offered her a share while she waited for her order. As I was half into the first rather tasty spring roll, I looked down on to the platter & saw what every diner dreads to see amongst their food…A strand of black hair. Ok that was it! I called the lady from behind the counter and showed her the offending hair. Quickly she swiped it off with her hand. I hope that gesture wasnt meant to indicate that we were to resume eating…I explained to her that we had a long wait, mucked up orders, mains before entrees & now a hair in the food and that it was not a good start or a pleasant introduction to their new restaurant. I acknowledged that they had just opened and may be finding their way but we couldnt stay to finish the meal. She was most apologetic as we got up to leave. I understand these things happen, especially in a new establishments, however they should be better prepared to be able to serve diners more efficiently during a busy evening. How hard is it to get an order of spring rolls & noodles right? I would like to give them a second chance but at this moment, I am not sure of any time soon.

If youre looking for traditional Vietnamese that is fresh then look no further. Pho Xua is your one stop shop featuring traditional dishes from the three different regions of Vietnam (north – sour flavours, centre – salty flavours and south – sweet flavours).

The stand out was the Bun Bo Hue (for those who dont know the dish its basically a more flavoursome pho with a slight spicy profile & thicker noodles -traditional to the central region of Vietnam). Yum yum yum.

The staff were fantastically friendly and mentioned the menu would be expanding as they get busier. Cant wait to visit again. What a wonderful edition to Glenferrie Road.
