Popular malatang spot with a great variety of fresh ingredients. I stayed behind to mind a table while my friends built their bowls, problem is our food all came out at random times and I was pretty much dining by myself most of the time.
I chose a mild soup base and unlike some other malatang spots, it did remain pretty mild. My friend who got medium thought it was pretty weak too so we dumped a bit of chilli oil into it to give it some more oomph. The numbing flavours of the broth were almost non-existent.
I got a variety of ingredients and for the most part was cooked well with a few photogenic items. My baby octopus however was tough and the pig blood curd had the oddest rubbery texture and did not snap under the pressure of my chopsticks. Overcooked and undercooked(?) respectively. Play it safe and get the regular items and notch it up with the spice levels. There’s also sesame sauce for dipping but I found it not thick enough to cling onto your food.
Wide variety of selection.
$2.99/100g
Told them Spicy but they gave me medium spicy tag instead?
But it was ok. Spicy but would go for a milder option to savour the soup base. It was really yummy.
Special stuff: Cheese Rice Cake Fish Ball, Pumpkin Rice Cake,
Purple sweet potato noodles, cheesy balls.
Mrs Zans Kitchen was our first malatang experience. We stumbled across this newly opened place whilst walking in Chinatown. We love the idea of creating your own hotpot because it meant we could customise what noodles, type of meat, seafood and soup we wanted. The price point was quite cheap compared to competitors, charging $3 per 100g. But lets talk about the soup base (we got the mild one)! It was super creamy and full of flavour. We believe it would be a great cure for a hangover… Highly recommended if you want to see what Melbourne has recently been hyped up with as many restaurants have opened with a similar concept.
