Cheap and cheerful dumplings place right next to Section 8. The service was actually much better than expected considering the reviews. Highlights: tucked away location. Lowlights: the pan fried dumplings were reheated so the skin was soggy. No chilli oil as a condiment. Xiao long bao was tiny and no soup; although the flavour was good. Perhaps better to come here during the dinner rush so everything is fresh.
I have lots of pleasant memories dining here years ago. The restaurant decor remained the same and the service is no fuss. We help ourselves with the hot tea. The food is served very fast too. The noodles are not as good as I remembered them, but the rice cake is really flavorful! The dumplings are big and juicy too. Price is very reasonable and its really crowded on weekends.
As I walk through the lane, memories rewinded as I would visit this dumpling house many years ago as a child. Intending to get take away, I found the place surprisingly empty during lunch the hour (Wednesday). The dish came out quickly, perfect texture, perfect taste with some similarities to it’s past; I would come back for the food. Over analysing the place, music was set low on pop music, the interior although having revived tables and platings, has not changed one bit and appears in need of a revamp that may attract more customers. As I left, the young gentlemen was very polite to the point that I became suspicious as I remember it’s past. I came back for a second trial, Friday lunch hour; much busier yet a similar experience.
For a casual place, it’s a nice place with no-fuss food. The place (to me) has changed it’s customer service for the positive; whether they just have the right people currently or have had some training however it seems like a place that changes staff often. I give a lot of credit to the young gentleman waitering the tables and the older gentleman serving the food.
Staff: 3.5/5
Food: 4/5
Decor: 2/5
Price: 4/5
Will return? Always if in area!
Quick, cheap, tasty food! I always get the Shanghai veg noodles and they are YUMMY! Cant comment on the dumplings as I hate dumplings but the garlic Chinese broccoli and my partners curry chicken were also extremely delicious! Cant wait to return.
I think the 2.6 rating is a bit harsh – sure they have had some issues in the past, but these guys were the dumpling place to be for the longest time. Before it was ‘cool’ to have cheap dirty dumplings, Shanghai Dumpling House was the place to be. It was the first place I went to in Melbourne to have dumps back in 2004.
I went here last night with a friend, we just got some pan friend dumplings and some mushroom dumplings. They were decent. We got a glass of house white which was…. interesting but for $3.50 I’m not going to complain really – the whole bottle is $15, so that tells you what the wine probably costs retail.
There are better dumplings out here but I do have sentimental feelings towards this place. It’s probably a 3 – 3.5 star dumpling place.
