We were lucky to be invited to this cosy japanese bbq restaurant. We loved the atmosphere of this restaurant. With a bar, booths and even traditional tatami style seating.
We ordered a range of wagyu beef that was tender and melted in your mouth. However the ox tongue was way too thick and not as enjoyable. This restaurant has a great selection of beef for sure! We also ordered a range of side dishes our favourite was the wagyu gyoza. The lamb ribs were also tasty but slightly fatty.
To accompany our Meal their extensive drinks menu was perfect. We had a hot sake which was perfect to end the night.
Would like to see an improvement on the service as we found that it lacked.
We came to Shou Sumiyaki for a delicious Japanese bbq banquet . We were happy to see majority of the premium meats were imported from Japan!
We chose the Kobe Beef set which was such a bargain ! It came with two miso soups , rice , a sashimi platter which had great fresh seafood , cucumber in truffle mayo and yakitori skewers .
The bbq portion included the Kobe cuts of meat , each delicious in their own way – you could really taste the fatty marbling which just melted in your mouth . We loved the sumiyaki which we were shown how to roll ( thin slice of meat wrapping this amazing garlic paste and then grilled )
We were then able to choose one more meat dish – we went for the wagyu A5 with truffles , the wagyu was surprisingly more tender than some cuts of the Kobe , not sure if it was because of my terrible cooking skills ?
On top of all this food we ordered the cheese sausages that were imported from japan. These are no included in the banquet but they are my absolute favourite in the world! Could not resist
All in all we had a great meal leading up to the new year ! Great food , amazing service and atmosphere . This place is definitely 5/5 stars
Thanks for having us!
Happy New Year! What a delight to be invited to try Japanese bbq. A first for me and what a fab experience.
We decided to go with the banquet for 3 to 4 people for $190 to try a variety of meals.
We started with the miso soup and entrees
Wagyu goza, Kani tempura salad which was nice and refreshing, yakitori chicken with salt and garlic. But our favourite entree was the Chilled organic cucumber with sesame was simple but full of flavour too.
We then started the bbq which we cooked ourselves
(but the staff were nice enough to show us how best to cook!). We started with the Kobe Wagyu beef rib eye sukiyaki style, Wagyu beef scotch, pot marinated Wagyu beef and the organic chicken with cheese and corn was also a first for me too and Wagyu beef oyster blade with lots and lots and lots of garlic was my favourite. Enjoyed with a side of rice and lettuce along witg dipping sauces this meal was both light and tasty but i think the secret is cooking over the charcoal .
Place looks nice. Very impressive menu. Food was generally above average. Prices are fair. Service ranged between rude and sullen/disinterested.
We were invited for dinner at the Shou Sumiyaki Japanese BBQ restaurant located in Little Bourke St, Chinatown near Russell St. As we walked in we were immediately hit with a packed restaurant, buzzing with chatter, sizzles from the BBQs and the bustle of many, many staff. It gave us a fervent sense of excitement and we couldnt wait to be seated.
Seating is made up of booths for up to 4 people, traditional Japanese low tables with cushions and a couple of very large tables for around 8 -10 people. Even though it was packed it didnt feel overcrowded and our booth gave us a great deal of privacy.
First of all we were given menus and the helpful, polite and very obliging waiter explained how things worked. Each table has their own BBQ, fuelled by coals where we cook our own meat and seafood. They brought out 2 trays of different homemade sauces including a BBQ sauce, mustard and Miso, spicy garlic and miso and sea salt and lemon. It was hard work and difficult choosing what to have as the menu is extensive and vast and everything sounded so good. Luckily, there are lots of pictures so that helped us quite a bit.
We chose Karikari Fried Potato which were crunchy chips with a wasabi sauce a very pleasant side dish. Next we had the Corn and Cheese which came in a tin foil dish and was placed on the BBQ to melt the cheese. It was fun watching it cook and even better eating it. Delicious gooey melted cheese over sweet juicy corn kernels just the best. We then had the Wagyu Gyoza and the Chicken and Lemongrass Gyoza. Both of these dishes came cooked and ready to eat with a little tasty side salad to go with them again, a most appetising plate of food. After that, we had the Chicken ribs. These we cooked on the BBQ for about 5 minutes. They were nicely charred and had that real BBQ taste. Dipped into one of the many homemade sauces they were succulent and ever so scrumptious. There was more to come! We then cooked our Beef dishes – Premium Kobe Wagyu Beef Scotch, imported from Japan and Wagyu Beef Tenderloin. This is what wed been waiting for! Both serves came finely sliced to perfection with each slice exactly the same and beautifully marbled. They cooked in 30 seconds and we ate them with the steamed rice, sauces and lettuce leaves. An unqualified party in your mouth premium beef at its absolute best. The duck breast was next also sliced perfectly and cooked in seconds. The flavour of the duck just sang out and we were once again treated to utter perfection. Believe it or not this was not the end. The lamb ribs they came to our table impeccably cooked, falling off the bone and… well there are just no words.
We washed it all down with an amazing cocktail from the colossal beverage menu, called Candy Crush made from watermelon juice, strawberry juice, lychee liquor and vodka and topped with a massive ball of candy floss!!! Just wow!
Needless to say we totally, utterly and entirely enjoyed our evening at Shou Sumiyaki and of course can highly recommend you go there to experience this divine restaurant for yourselves.
The service is outstanding patient and helpful staff and the owner explained her vision to us which was most interesting. Shou Sumiyaki is her 6th restaurant in Chinatown with another one opening soon! We cant wait.
Dine Time: Sunday 7PM
What: Set menu (3-4 people). Miso soup, tempura salad, cucumber salad, salmon sashimi, chicken wing yakitori, chicken thing yakitori, wagyu scotch, oyster blade, beef rib, wagyu sirloin with garlic & sesame, kurobuta pork, chicken and cheese ($190/$47.50pp).
The restaurant is in a very central location in Chinatown and as I enter, I immediately notice how busy it is. Quite a large queue has formed, but not just around the side, but seated along the bar as well. There are quite a number of booths stretching the length of the restaurant, but due to the nature of the dining, Japanese BBQ can take longer than your average meal.
Being part of the Gyoza Gyoza group, the menu is familiarly large, with loads of options I could have sat there trying to decide for a good 30 minutes. Fortunately, they have set menus which include a good variety of items.
I wont go into detail of the smaller entre dishes except that the crab tempura has a nice, light and crunchy batter. The yakitori arrived a bit later into the meal and was very much overcooked to the point it was dry and brittle. I laughed as I bit into the chicken skin because it was wrapped in an entire clove of garlic, but surprisingly it wasnt strong, just mellow.
The wagyu scotch was very tender, with really good flavour. If you go for this as a single dish, youve chosen well. Similarly the oyster blade was very tender, with juices coming out at each bite. The beef rib was a little bit too chewy compared to the other two. The sirloin is thinly cut and spread with minced garlic and sesame oil. Grilled lightly, it had excellent flavour.
The kurobuta pork had a good bite with more flavour than your average white pork. Surprising, as it didnt have a lot of fat on it either, which is good as it would have smoked up the place (which was already getting quite smoky).
The chicken had a light teriyaki marinade, which charred up nicely on the grill. We were told it goes with the corn and cheese fondue but by the time it had melted with the butter, it was too oily.
Served alongside the array of meats were various dipping sauces, however I found that a small dab of salt worked best in bringing out the natural flavours. There was also lettuce provided to wrap the meat in.
Service was very good the wait staff were attentive and changed the grill regularly, and also provided explanation of the meats, sauces and how to grill.
So the main question is, is the set menu good value? At $47.50 each, it takes away the stress of going through and selecting different items and it works out to be slightly cheaper as well. CHECK. One major drawcard is that the restaurant uses proper charcoal, which gives the meat a really nice smoky flavour.
Thanks to Jenny and her team for hosting us.
Had high expectations with the good reviews. Kind service, busy and enjoyable atmosphere. Meat steak quality was very standard, really expected better! The desert looked amazing, however the vanilla cake was bland and tasteless, couldve been so much better. Good experience but wouldnt return
