2.6 is fair.
Things were poorly coordinated here today for our group of 12 despite plenty of assurances when the booking was arranged. Tables hadnt been configured for the group so we had to sit in groups of 8 and 4. No attempt was made to fix the issue which resulted in a less than satisfactory catch up of former work colleagues.
I chose the bento box. You get a choice of protein and I chose wagyu beef drawing on advice in previous reviews. The serving of meals of wasnt coordinated. One arrived 15 mins early and others in 5 minute intervals which was awkward for all as those that had their meals didnt know when to start.
The wagyu beef was tough and near cold by the time it appeared. I did wonder if it really was wagyu. The rest of the bento box was just ok. Sadly, Id rank it as one of the most ordinary bentos Ive had in my time.
This was a pretty pedestrian experience. There is much better Japanese food in Melbourne would be my view.
The Dear Luncher has voyaged to just about every formal sit-down Japanese restaurant in Melbourne’s CBD. Takumi is a little different from the others, in that it has that DIY BBQ focus. Thats the main game here at Takumi, and it shows. The Dear Luncher visited for a quick bento lunch, with the Yakiniku wagyu, swapping out the salmon sashimi for gyoza, and then ordering an extra serve of gyoza on top.
The gyoza were deep fried. This meant that they were lacking the kind of lightly pan-fried methodology so well executed in other Japanese establishments. Eating these was a bit like having one of those money-bag things. Quite the letdown. As for the wagyu itself, was it good? Yes. The taste, marination and texture was on point. Unfortunately the rest of the bento options just seemed a tad out of place. Strange selections like bean sprouts, mushrooms and pumpkin. Not all that enticing and everything apart from the beef seemed dry. The Dear Luncher happily concedes that he is not a Bento-aficionado (there’s a creative name for someone out there) This array of assorted objects to accompany the meat and rice was not really satisfying or alluring.
The Premium Yebisu was the elixir consumed for this meal, $11 a stubby. A very malty brew. Nothing particularly special about it, unless youre particularly fond of it you are better off just sticking with the $8-9 beers (local brews + Kirin Megumi).
Perhaps one really needs to sit down at Takumi for an extended period and indulge in the BBQ options to really get a sense of what this place is all about. The lunch experience via bento was a tad underwhelming.

Good food, nice interior and friendly staff. We came here for dinner and ended up ordering 4 sets in total to share for 5 people. We all love the salmon carpaccio, rib eye and scallops. The serving were small and we were all surprised when we opened the foil and found just a piece of oyster. We ordered 4 sets so we were given 4 oysters. Also, with our last order of another set, the kitchen mustve rushed as we were given a frozen beef tataki. There were a few hiccups like forgetting to serve us the edamame, kimuchi and the last Wagyu Beef tataki but we still had a great dining experience so all good.
Should be a 4 & 1/2 rating.
I came her with my wife for dinner on Saturday night and cannot talk highly enough of our experience.
For entree we ordered the salmon carpaccio which was amazing. The salmon was fantastic and the tangy wasabi/soy sauce was to die for. For the main we ordered the premium sampler which was amzing, all of the meat was tender and melted in your mouth. We also ordered the squid which was enjoyable as well.
The service and friendliness of the staff added to our experience.
smokeless bbq was really nice here. The meat is marinated and full of flavour. Melts in your mouth yumminess. The lunch menu is nice too. I got addicted to the curry rice dish.
The food quality is high and service is alright. But the environment was quite bad when the front door is open. But overall rating is above average. Worth a try!
