This cafe is like many cafes ubiquitous throughout Melbourne’s high quality cafe scene, but occupies ten squares on Hardware St. The menu is full of standard brunch classics, so the mission was to find the most innovative option on offer. The fried chicken and conbread waffle came with bacon jam, pickled cauliflower and thyme infused maple syrup. Taking a little waffle, chicken and cauliflower in each bite harmonised the flavours, balancing out the sweet, salty and sour tastes nicely. It was a quiet time of the day with just a steady stream of takeaway coffee orders. Friendly and polite service throughout the visit – faultless here. While not exorbitant, pricing is a bit on the higher side for the other menu items.
Ten Square is a quaint little brunch spot on Hardware Lane with an exciting menu and bright layout. Prompt service and had no trouble getting a table without reservation, unlike the surrounding cafes with queues down the street. Food and coffee was great – well balanced and delicious. I’d highly recommend the Eggs Benedict, as my husband enjoyed it thoroughly. My Square Eggs was good too but the sausage featured in the dish wasn’t my favourite type to use for a breakfast meal. Friendly staff who were very accommodating and welcoming. If you’re looking for a terrific brunch cafe with a truly Melbourne ambiance, stop by Ten Square.
