With the closure of a lot of the Pie Faces in the CBD area that’s left a big hole in the pie market. In comes Wonderpop & Deli, your artisanal pie cafe. It’s definitely lured in the working crowd, previous owners at this location failed to make an impact in this back street.
I get a latte to start me off, lack of latte art and had quite a bit of froth to it. The strength was spot on however and it came with a small chocolate cookie, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was baked in house as it maintained a nice chewy consistency to it.
For myself I get a chunky meat pie served on top of mashed potatoes, peas and gravy. The pie itself had tender chunks of beef inside, the pastry was slightly gummy with a nice amount of doneness. I found all the elements mingled well together however the filing in the pie was very rich and at times overwhelmed the entire plate. They need a pie with a much tamer flavour profile to make it work, the chunky meat pie itself would work better as a standalone.
My workmate got the tradie slammer which was a mince pie with caramelised onions between a couple of brioche buns. That’s one for the photos. Tradies do love their pies and there were a few lurking outside.
I’m not deterred by my experience here as they are still relatively new and there is plenty of room for refinement. If you don’t have the luxury of time, grab a pie and maybe a salad to go (they’ve got a pie and salad deal).
