So-so. The food here is fusion and the Japanese flavour has been watered down. I like that they have tried to do something different but it’s just not super tasty. We had the beef tataki which was ok, the fries which were probably the best thing and good value for money, the curry which was mediocre and the eggplant ‘rice paper rolls’ which didn’t really impress me but my friend enjoyed them. I probably wouldn’t race back given all the food options in Melbourne.
This is a great place on Degraves street. Most other cafes on this street have a European feel so it’s quite different to have Japanese food here. I like that it has several drinks on the menu that uses the yuzu fruit, like Yuzu Lime Bitters, Yuzu tea and Yuzu Shu cocktail. The Yuzu tea is like a better version of lemon tea. The Yuzu Shu cocktail is a bit like limoncello. The Japanese Peri Chips are very crispy and addictive. We’re most surprised by the Crispy Duck. At first we thought it’ll just come out as crispy skin, but it’s actually the tempura duck leg, really a signature dish. It’s also fun sitting by the street, people watching. We noticed many people looked at the menu but didn’t commit to try this place. Maybe the menu on paper looks too much like a takeaway place, but it has so much more to offer. Such a hidden gem.
