Visited with my partner and 2 dogs and sat outside. Food was well made with great flavour. Both coffee and food did take a little longer (especially coffee) than normal but not a big deal. While the young ladies at the tables were very polite, there was some attention to detail missing. No sugar, salt or pepper on the table for the whole time. We finished our coffees and one of the wait staff inspected the outside area including our table but didn’t clear our cups. Although of less importance, both staff members seemed unimpressed with dogs. I know that shouldn’t be a pre requisite but there are a LOT of dogs in Mentone. Overall a nice place and I would go back for sure. Just some detail lacking in my opinion.
White Bricks is aptly named, with its white brick walls exuding a relaxing and casual vibe, and creating a bright and airy feel to the cafe. The food here is not your usual brunch fare, with unique twists given to dishes such as the matcha souffle pancake, and the salmon stack. Flavours are punchy and bold, and the chef’s Korean background shines through in each dish. The umami mayo featured in the salmon stack was a delicious mix of sweet, zesty, and had a slight spicy kick to it. Even the basil pesto pasta came with an onsen egg. It’s also therefore no surprise then to find yuzu peels hiding between layers of the matcha souffle pancakes. The ingredients are fresh and of high quality, as seen by the prawns in the pasta, and also the beautifully torched salmon. My friend and I also tried the smoothies and the Naughty Boy with peanut butter, bananas, dates, honey and almond milk was a thick and creamy concoction that really hit the spot. For something lighter but just as decadent, go for the Arnold’s with blueberries, peanut butter, maple syrup and whey protein. With so many other interesting dishes on the menu to try, I can see myself coming back for more when I’m in the area. Thank you for the meal.
White Bricks is the first cafe run by an ex-chef working in some of Melbourne’s best cafes which is immediately evident from the unique, Japanese fusion menu and absolutely stunning presentation in every dish.We had the Salmon & Rye ($19), Breakfast Ramen ($18) and Tim Tam French Toast ($19.50). Every dish was really high in quality and pretty faultless overall – also really good value, I would easily expect to pay 20% more if this were located in the CBD or inner city.I absolutely loved the Scandinavian style Salmon & Rye with perfectly pan fried Atlantic salmon topped with creme cheese, pesto, fennel almond crumb, dill and a poached egg. A dish that just goes so well together and perfect if you want something hearty but not oily or too meaty. Also loved the Breakfast Ramen which had a delicious 18hour bone broth and filled with organic noodles, generous slabs of chasui pork, a runny soy egg, mushrooms and bok choy. Deceptively filling and full of flavour. For dessert we shared their signature Tim Tam French Toast which is firstly, presented like a work of art! The thick slice of house made chocolate brioche is topped with a purple pear (poached in blueberries), vanilla custard, dark chocolate chards and the most divine tim tam ice cream. Everything about this dish was perfect and not too sweet – one of my favourite brunch desserts for sure! It was even better paired with the Tim Tam Smoothie ($8) however the smoothie was on the sweeter side. Coffee was great, supplied by Dukes coffee and loved the clean and crisp white interior with lovely plants giving some colour. An all around excellent cafe and i can’t wait to return! Thanks for having us in.
