Where can one eat a sublime gnocchi, drink NZ white and watch theses things take off and land (complete with Biggles-like characters in full WWII regalia sauntering around)? FD is superb if you want somewhere quiet with good food and wine. Ignore the critics. ‘Nuff said.
Nice different location but sadly food not up to scratch. Reasonable prices but food in most RSL’s is a lot better. Service average – plates being taken away while still having last few bites of burgers. Won’t be returning.
4 of us enjoyed an absolutely delicious meal on Friday evening. The decor indicates a bistro/RSL feel, however, the food is top league restaurant quality! None of us were disappointed with our orders – pork belly, lamb shanks and a delicious vegetarian ricotta gnocchi. We’ll certainly be back to enjoy another meal!

Friday night my partner chose the Lamb Shank and I had a Porterhouse with vegetables. The steak was beautifully cooked. I requested it blue and it was perfect. I had chosen the whisky cream peppercorn sauce (I don’t think I have the name quite right but it definitely had whisky cream in it). No sign or taste of whisky. No creamy sauce. Loads of peppercorns on top. Maybe the description in the menu needs adjusting to what is being presented?
The lamb shank was really good. But the two beans on the side were a tad
lonely.
The service as usual was excellent!

This place has an RSL vibe and seems to be transitioning from bingo bistro decor to a bit more contemporary. The menu wasn’t quite pub or cafe. Unlikely to return without kids (to see the aeroplanes) or grandparents (seems to appeal to them).
This is a great cafe for aeroplane lovers or if you are the parent of an aeroplane loving child. The outdoor area of this cafe is pretty much at the foot of the runway at moorabin airport. Kids are entertained for hours watching aeroplanes and helicopters taking off and landing. The cafe also has aeroplane memorabilia inside. It is frequented mostly by veterans and aeroplane enthusiasts.
Food: The food is average to good pub food (Parmas/lasagne/burgers/fries/milkshakes/coffees). Servings are large and flavours are good. You wouldn’t travel across town to come here just for food but If you want to come aeroplane watching, this is a great spot you can come and sit and order some food/drinks whilst doing it.
The BIG downside: the hours!! They are open only after 11am. There is a playground nearby and on weekends there are always families with kids hanging around. Please open earlier so we can all come in for a coffee already!!
Under new management, one of my favourite eating places is now better than ever. A great aviation atmosphere with planes taxing, taking off and landing outside the large viewing windows, while enjoying top service at the bar and at the dining tables.
