How good is this place, scrumptious food, descent servings and good service.
We had the pork ribs, sausage and prawn skewer for entree which were amazing topped off with that fresh soft bread & butter which you can never have enough of.
For mains how can go wrong with their mouthwatering Scotch fillet, Rib eye accompanied well by fat fries, baked veggies, baked potato, baked Mushroom and feta is always a must and those delicious sauces-creamy garlic, mushroom & black pepper. The Porterhouse was a tad overcooked but still tasty nevertheless. A good selection of cocktails, wine & deserts such as their sticky date pudding ended the night well.
Initial experience and service appeared good, the place was neat and nice presentation.
One order in particular that both my friend and I ordered was lamb shoulder and Greek salad on the specials menu.
The meal was pretty much inedible the lamb was so chewy i couldnt consume it and the Greek salad was not fresh or traditional enough.
As I did not eat the meal we provided the feedback to staff who advised they will let the chef know (no further advice from the chef was received) and upon paying for the approximately $140 plus bill provided this feedback again on the meal and was no apology, more argued with that lamb shoulder is ‘the shoulder’ hence not tender regardless of the fact I could not chew this meal pretty much laughed at and I should have expected it to be crap.
No other lamb shoulder I have ordered elsewhere has ever been so bad. Clearly they could have seen the meal was not even touched regardless of their opinion it wasnt very good and this feedback was not well received. I would have liked to have seen one of them sit down and try to eat that meal.
We also had a bowl of chips which seemed reheated or refried.
Over priced, bad quality, some joke staff and will never be returning.
Unfortunate as probably could have been all forgiven with a refund of that meal and acknowledgement.
Sports cars. They have to look good, go fast and be relatively reliable or else there is no point to them. Consistency of performance available lap after lap after lap.
Squires Loft in Mornington, just down from the Grand hotel, is the Alfa Romeo of steak restaurants. It looks great, sounds good and has the capacity to wow passers by with a magnificent product. Reliable and consistent? Not so much.
The staff at Squires loft are lovely. Attentive, engaging people who know the trade and add an easy charm to their service that makes you feel right at home. The drinks we got were well made and the whiskey sour was particularly well put together, eschewing the maraschino cherries for morello and having the perfect balance of bourbon to gomme and lemon. The chairs were comfortable, the tables spacious and the decor fashionably understated.
The steaks? A mixed bag. One of our party of three found their rib eye succulent, well charred and caramelised beautifully. One said their eye fillet was more life a thick piece of boot leather, overcooked and dry. Mine, a 300g eye fillet was a contradiction in itself. Half of it was beautifully moist and medium rare, melting in the mouth. Somehow the other half was dry, not overly so, but enough for me to reach for a condiment to moisten the mouth enough to make it paletable. The garlic butter that I had ordered to come with the dish however, was atrocious. Semi cooked minced garlic in a clarified melted butter and oil mix that was simply awful. I found myself dipping into the black pepper sauce of one of my companions to avoided my own. I even tried the blue cheese sauce of my other companion, but found it brown, processed and unappetising. Chips accompanying the meal were great, and the salad we ordered to share was fresh and crisp. The accompaniments are not the point though.
If you are going to specialise in a particular type of cuisine, you have to do it consistently well. You need to be able to hit the mark every time, the same performance benchmarks without variation. Vlado’s is a great example of this, year after year under the man himself they produced exceptional quality product. Their product WAS their advertising.
Alfa Romeo then. Their product looks great, sounds fantastic and is capable of exceptional performance, but Ferrari or Rolls Royce they are not. They simply lack the consistency to make their cars a truly great product. Squires Loft is the same. I’ll go back to see if maybe it was an off night. The staff and the potential are there, but in the meantime, needs a service and a tune up.
