I am not into writing restaurant reviews and haven’t written one before. However my appalling experience at Golden Ocean Seafood BBQ restaurant in Mount Waverley compelled me to write my first review as I hope it would help ensure that other unknowing customers won’t fall into the same trap as us. It was a disgusting case of a ruthless and dishonest restaurant operator ripping off a pensioner.
We were charged $560 for a single lobster and noodles dish.
When the price was queried I was told it was 4.25lbs. at $108 per lb. They then changed it to $118/Ib. I said that still doesn’t total $560. They then said it must be $128/lb and 4.75lbs.
That not only doesn’t add up, but is also about $30-$40 a lb above what better restaurants charge. This equates to being overcharged nearly $200 on the lobster dish alone and 3 other dishes were about 40% above the going rate. Paying $677 for 7 people at a very ordinary poorly located hole in the wall Chinese restaurant with boxes stacked high with supplies, in the dining area, is nothing short of daylight robbery!
We definitely won’t be returning to this restaurant. If you find yourself at Golden Ocean restaurant in Mount Waverley, please beware, don’t get ripped off like us.

Party of 5, 4 of whom were traditional Chinese – Utter rubbish food and ripoff!

It’s been a very long time since I’ve been to a restaurant I believe to be as bad as this. What’s more, all of my Chinese colleagues not only agreed, but were in total disgust not only due to the quality of food, but the ridiculous pricing.

Of the 5 in attendance, three are aged over 80 and are not big eaters, I wasn’t overly hungry either but my wife was. So on the advice of the restaurant owner, my Chinese friends ordered 1 x dish of supposedly organically fed chicken, 1 x dish of garlic and spinach and 1 x dish of roast pork/duck. We had a small amount of steamed rice and 3 x beers.

The first to arrive was the – believe it or not – little pile of spinach with garlic – for the princely sum of $24.90. It was fine. No complaints. Thing is, because my friends ordered from the owner, not from the menu, we didn’t know the cost.

Next was the roast pork and duck, which was okay, most accepting that it was edible, but that it should have been given the price of $29.90

Finally we received what had to be the most disgusting chicken I’ve ever laid my eyes on. Fatty, disgusting cuts that even my super traditional Chinese friends couldn’t believe had been dished up. It was unadulterated rubbish. What’s more, the supposed organically fed chicken was chewy and full of smashed bones etc. Unbelievable. And this cost $39.90! We left more than half and when asked if we would like to take it away, nobody was interested in the slightest.

Of course we can’t forget the four (4) small, and I mean small, bowls of rice for a total of $15!

And the beer? Amazingly, a little bottle of Tsingtao costs $8.50. Seriously. As Tsingtao is a cheap beer, the ‘norm’ of around $6.50 to $7.00 would have been appropriate.

What has to be described (as a whole) the worst meal I have had in a very long time (including all I have had in Thailand, many many areas of China, Cambodia, Singapore etc), cost a total of $134.70. It was rubbish, the chicken a disgrace, and $25 for a blob of garlic spinach is nothing more than a joke.

Look, I could go on, as could my friends, however the restaurant can rest assured that none of us, or our many Chinese friends will want to go to the Golden Ocean restaurant anytime soon. Or ever!

Ordered a whole duck as take away and was gouged with a price of $40! Not returning ever and pretty rude service too!
This is a small restaurant which we have been once before for sit down meal and lots of take aways. Apparently they have raised their prices so much and their attitude has got arrogant. Customers have rights too and we have the right to go elsewhere!

This is a really good place but seems to be very quiet. Great roast pork – tasty meat and crispy skin but they never make enough of it so lucky if you get to try. Char siu pork is good and tasty and definitely try the salt pepper chicken ribs. The female host is good but the man is a little short tempered. Could that be why the people don’t like to eat here?

A small family run Chinese restaurant that cooks with love. Had dinner here not long ago with our family friends who were friends of the chef and owner. We were recommended off menu items which are basically their specials of the day and so glad we went with that as being Chinese, I’ve eaten pretty much tried everything they had on the menu at other places, so it was something different.

We ordered the lobster noodle, abalone and snow peas, spicy salt soft shell crabs, poached free range chicken, snow pea leaves and a soup (forgot what it was). This meal didn’t come cheap as you pay for what you get for and it was worth every cent! (Also because lobster and abalone is never cheap! Haha)

The lobster noodle is one of the better ones I’ve tasted as other restaurants usually make the noodles very gulgy and thick (too much thickener I think) and the lobster is sometimes over cooked, but golden ocean does it just right with plebty of noodles.

The soft shell crab was very interesting too! Never had it this particular way. They cooked it through with curry leaves with left the whole dish with a lovely aroma that filled the air.

Definitely can’t wait to come back with the family to try some other stuff. Definitely ask for recommendations if you want something different from your typical Chinese restaurant meals!

From other family friends that also have been, it’s best to notify them in advance that you are going for dinner, not because it’s busy but so that they can get any particular dish you want in advance. They really cater to your taste to the best of their possibilities limited by seasonality I’m assuming.

Hope this long review gets them the publicity the need and deserve hidden away in mount Waverley ! 🙂

NEGATIVE Be prepared to be slaughtered if you want to dine in to eat rice with the recommended dishes by the waiter or waitress. They will recommend something off the menu and you will be slapped with a whopping bill. This place is only good for the usual takeaway meals that cost between $9 – $13. My family of 6 paid $235 for a meal that shouldn’t cost more than $150 in such a typical small family run restaurant. We had rice, stir fry kailan, stir fry beef noodles, fish ball soup, home made tofu, 3 x noodles with only one so called extra large prawns(it was mediocre), salt and pepper squid. The other reviewer’s pic of noodle with prawn had 2 prawns, were we short changed? You will be better off eating at Secret Kitchen(SK) in cbd. I paid $330 for a dinner of 15 people in SK’s posh setting, good service and everyone was well fed too.
