The centrepiece of the otherwise beautifully conceived and executed eggplant parmagarna wasnt cooked..there is a huge amount of taste and mouth feel difference between half cooked and cooked eggplant. Any chef paying attention to their food would not have presented the dish I ate.

Delicious pizza lovely staff. We went there on the Australia Day long weekend during the Newstead folk festival. Despite the town being the busiest it is all year, the staff were absolutely wonderful, very welcoming and incredibly nice. We had the two vegetarian pizzas and two glasses of the local riesling. The pizza was delicious (excellent use of lemon oil on top of one) as was the wine. As we left our waitress checked in on us again just to make sure everything was ok. If you’re anywhere near Newstead we recommend the detour.

Good country style cooking and cakes – worth the stop to break the journey. My partner and I were looking at buying property in both Maldon and Daylesford, and Newstead which is along the direct road right between the two seemed like a nice place to break the journey.
Dig – which I hadn’t been to until this weekend (February 22nd) is a cafe/coffee shop whose decoration would not be out of place in inner Melbourne – which makes it all the more welcoming, pleasant and unexpected when needing a good coffee.
Run it seems by a family and assisted by locals, the place serves cakes, coffee, drinks, snacks and lunch with dinner it seems on Friday night and Saturday night strictly from 6pm only. The ‘snack’ and service we had on the Friday afternoon was so enjoyable, that when passing through at dinner time next night, and not wanting to wait until we got home to Melbourne, we stopped for dinner. I had a nice steak that came out exactly as requested (medium rare) with mash and beans – fairly simple country cooking but well done. I have a nut allergy and they gladly substituted the sauce (I think it had pesto in it) with a mushroom one they whipped up. Partner had a lamb rogan josh, spicy without being overwhelming and just enough on the plate not to feel hungry nor a greedy guts. I washed mine down with a local Harcourt grown and bottled apple cider (they also had a pear cider and a large range of other wines and beers on offer). We passed on desert (we had a brownie and cream the previous day that was also good) due to the time we needed to drive back but noted the place was doing good business – they also appear to do take away pizzas for the locals and business in that direction was also constant.
As noted below, there is a courtyard out back (not dog friendly but owners and their dogs can sit out front at tables) and a ramp allowing mobility impaired access to the toilets and the inside of the cafe plus tables out front to watch the town.
The most important thing is – would I stop and eat again if up that way. Yup – certainly would. Set your expectations folks – this is not 5 star cordon bleu city cooking nor do they advertise as such. It is good well done country style meals. And the friendly locals make it more likely we will return as on one of the days, after a series of police and fire engines raced through town, the owner unbeknownst to me (we had been talking earlier about the direction I was driving on to next) rang up the local fire brigade to check the location of the bush fire and came after me down the street as we were walking back to the car to let me know it was on the road I was to take. Now thats local hospitality and service for you…………………..
If your in town also pay a visit to a shop called The Red Store diagionally opposite – it is a lovely local second hand, collectable or antique stores (or all 3), with lovely older pieces to spread around the home (if your home runs to that style). Must say bought a couple of things myself so the town got at least some of my wallet one way or another.. 🙂

Quite enjoyed the Dig. A quaint little cafe on the outskirts of Castlemaine. Well worth your time and hard earned.

Surprise Surprise!. Lunch at DIG Newstead wasn’t planned we were just passing by and stopped off to stretch our legs. But we will definitely be going back to enjoy more of the splendid food and service at this country cafe. 10/10

Great food, warm and friendly service!. Dig is a regular for lunch and never disappoints. The food is good – the cakes especially, which are made by one of the owners Robyn…they are to die for! Lee looks after the front of house and her warmth, friendliness and wonderful memory for names and faces makes it a great experience each time.
