On a cold and chilly Melbourne night in need of some nourishment, it seemed appropriate that we called into a restaurant called Base Camp (Okay, so the cool Melbourne night wasn’t quite as inhospitable as a Nepalese mountain range – but the temperature was in single digits).
We started off with a serve of Momo, homemade vegetarian Nepalese dumplings served with a tomato chutney. An unusual texture and a little different, but definitely worth a try (particularly when washed down with an imported ‘Mustang’ beer).
Next we had the Nihari Murg, a chicken thigh curry with yogurt, mace and coriander. It had a bit of kick but certainly nothing unmanageable for those sensitive to spicy food. This, along with the creamy butter chicken we ordered, provided ample gravy in which to dip some delicious freshly cooked garlic naan.
Overall I would recommend this restaurant for those lovers of authentically prepared dishes but are after a higher standard of food than your typical (albeit good) curry house. Nice setting, atmosphere and friendly staff all combine to mean I’m looking forward to returning.
If this is what Balti Indian food is like, Im not a fan. The onion bhaji was just onion rings. Nice enough, but no flavor other than onion. The palak paneer sauce had the texture of paint and was too sweet. The paneer its self was nice though. The peshwari naan (the reason I chose this place) was very good though. Id probably order again just for that.
We discovered this place after a recommendation from a friend. We have been so many times, always had great experiences and been there for NYE dinner twice! Momos are a must, try a Balti. Naan is delicious…we just keep going back!
