Food and Service: After a long walk in national rhododendron gardens, this cafe has the perfect menu to keep you on your feet. Jaffels, pies, cakes and coffees. Food was good. I was happy with my meal.
Look and Feel: With seating options available for indoor and outdoor, you can indulge into your meal with a mesmerising view of the garden. Service was good and despite heavy rush during peak weekend hours, our food arrived on time.
Do try: The grilled sandwiches
Perfect small cafe to find inside a large garden. Coffees, pies, jaffles and cakes are the comfort food they serve and I was happy with my lunch! A great convenient spot if you want to make the most of your time in the gardens. I’d suggest bringing your own picnic instead though if you have the time, there’s several great spots to sit with friends.
This is a small cafe in the fantastic National Rhododendron Gardens. It’s best viewed a place to stop for a coffee while you’re enjoying the gardens. You might also a get snack, but don’t expect anything main meal sized or gourmet. If you’re looking for lunch, there’s plenty of options a short drive away after you finish at the gardens.
Located within the magnificent National Rhododendron Gardens, this little cafe has a fairly limited menu, with only a couple of vegetarian options, but nevertheless is quite pleasant. There is a decking area to enjoy your meal and a view of the grounds, and a small indoor dining area with window views. I had the pumpkin and potato quiche, which was very nice, and the coffee was up to standard. The decor is basic, but the service was friendly and quick.
Vireya cafe or should I say dump !. Poor service. Stale sandwiches. Very limited menu.
An absolute disgrace, in a beautiful location, visited by many from overseas.
Just not good enough!. The Rhododendron Gardens are wonderful. The cafe is not. The menu is limited and uninspiring. The decor is reminiscent of East Germany under the Russians. The three women who run it just look uninterested. Our group ordered several things; we had to remind them on everything. The various orders appeared in an entertainingly random sequence.
If you are going to these wonderful gardens, take your own food and drink, if you don’t you will wish you had.
Gorgeous gardens, basic food. The National Rhododendron Gardens are amazing, especially in Spring. The caf is part of the building complex in the gardens entrance; the room is very basic and unimpressive, looking more like an indoor school canteen. The terrace is OK, the view is somewhat obstructed by trees and shrubs.
Caf Vireya employs a professional catering firm (Sky High Mount Dandenong I think), their main game is catering for wedding receptions in an adjoining room. In the caf they serve very good quality coffees. As for food, its pre-prepared basic stuff: scones and slices, limited wraps and some commercial pies and pasties of decent quality. At $6, a pie + side salad is more about value than fine dining. They also have a few picnic baskets, but it looked a bit expensive for some chicken mayo sangas, cheese and crackers and white wine.
Anyway, I still recommend caf Vireya for early afternoon tea before a good walk. Warning, no more food service after 3pm despite gardens closing at 7pm on that day.
