A nice atmosphere for dinner (dimmed lighting and a wood fire in the corner) but it is let down by lazy customer service (long wait for meals, incorrect order) and average meals. Pork belly entree was over cooked and dry. The chowder lacked flavour, was not creamy and appeared to have been made with a seafood mix from Coles. The steaks (which is marketed as the restaurants piece de resistance) were underwhelming (ie. rare when asked for medium, sauce lacked flavour and mash & vegetables cold). Panko Prawns entree was better than okay. Unfortunate because this restaurant has so much potential. We probably wont come back.
A venue of notable appointment with food and wine to match. The service is as high as one would expect from such a venue.
The menu has a very nice twist to be able to customise your meal in very delightful with way.
If you are looking for something special, then definitely give Copperfields a try.
Very good quality meals, friendly service and beautiful ambiance, bit high prices as expected, fish of the day wasnt the best. Nice eye fillet, .. overall good experience
As noted in other reviews, here you choose a meat and an accompaniment and the two are put together in some way for delivery to the table.
Our choices were Tuscan Chicken and Highlander Lamb with the rosmary & garlic wedges.
When the mains arrived, my partner spotted a hair on the chicken and since the waitress was still there the meal was taken away leaving me to eat my main. I will say that a hair is something we’d be unlikely to worry about too much normally – dishes aren’t cooked in cleanrooms.
The lamb was accompanied by a pile of shredded bacon, mashed potato and a selection of capsicum, carrot, bean and a few other things (this part appeared common to both meals). Unfortunately, the chef had not taken best advantage of the tenderness of lamb loin as it had been cooked slightly past medium-well and had been sliced into 1.5cm thick discs. There was only the tiniest amount of pink in the meat. It was okay, but clearly overcooked (we were not asked about how we’d like it done).
When the replacement chicken arrived, it was served on a bed of risotto and was pretty tasty. Nicely grilled and still quite tender and moist.
The wedges were as one would expect – small though.
I can say that everything was delivered at a good temperature.
For dessert we ordered the Eton Mess and the Molten Chocolate Pudding.
The Eton Mess was probably over-supplied with a very sweet strawberry sauce. It was nice enough and a good-sized serving but over-sweet.
The molten chocolate pudding was, unfortunately, cooked solid with nary a hint of sauce remaining. The waitress suggested just adding some heated chocolate sauce to the dish, which I was okay with: it would have given roughly the right result. However, the chef thought better and had another shot at it (meaning that my partner was left to eat her Mess while I waited for another pudding).
Unfortunately, the chef failed again. The replacement pudding was undercooked – the top was basically the only cakey part and I had a ramekin about 3/4 full of chocolate sauce.
About halfway between attempt 1 and attempt 2 would have been perfect.
At this point the restaurant gave up and comp’ed the dessert. I ate the cakey bits and left the rest.
While the manner in which the mistakes were dealt with was commendable, I felt the price point indicated they wouldn’t happen in the first place. Ultimately, I left a bit unsatisfied by the food.
In the end, I have to rate the food, and it was just okay unfortunately: one dish overcooked, another failed completely and one just too sweet.
The Dandenongs as a destination is absolutely enhanced by Copperfields at Olinda. It epitomizes service with a smile.
The menu is unusual insofar as it offers classical Australian food with customized sauces, so if you find this confusing take advice from your waiter; in our case it made the main course something special.
With respect to the drinks menu I stuck with the local beers as a reward for a hectic bike ride earlier in the day . Our vivacious hostess assured me the local wines offer the same special quality and variety, and knowing she is working in collaboration with the amazing Olinda Cellars I dont doubt her feedback.
Finally Copperfields is an expensive up market restaurant but well worth the drive up Mt Dandenong. Just dont overdo the wine if your driving back down the mountain!!
This restaurant is very romantic and cosy, staff are also so friendly! My partner and I drive here religiously from Melbourne just to eat their eye fillet with Dorchester sauce. We are big foodies and we can honestly say this is the best steak we have ever had!
My partner and I have come here about 5 times now. You can’t go wrong with the eye fillet and the Dorchester sauce! You also get a complimentary appetizer which I think is a nice touch. The atmosphere of the restaurant is romantic and cosy. Amazing food! We will be back soon
