There may be some good reviews of the food at this café, but we won’t be back to try it – having found the proprietor to be such a turn-off. We were looking for a dog friendly lunch spot on a rainy day. There is a generous veranda overhanging the cafe front, with large bench seats under it and a small table and chairs just outside its shelter. When the only customer in the café suggested moving the table and chairs under the veranda, the proprietor simply spoke the customer’s name in a tone to silence her. There was no attempt by the proprietor to accommodate in any way. (What a pity for the staff too, missing out on the opportunity for tips.)Perhaps this place is successful enough – at least for now – that customer service is optional. However, it’s a rare place that can afford to do this, and looking at the menu, it did not look that special nor that good value. Port Albert may be a small town but there are quite a few options. We ended up at Wildfish instead – a thoroughly enjoyable experience, a similar price-range to the Port Albert Café, but Wildfish is a proper restaurant with delicious food, a great location on the wharf, great view, and impeccable and welcoming service.

I took a day trip from Melbourne and would travel here again just to visit Port Albert Cafe & Wine Bar.Owner/chef, Kim Wherett’s cooking style brings to mind Donna Hay with her creative fusion of flavours and passion for fresh, high quality ingredients (and local where possible).I had beautiful large, fresh coconut prawns which were cooked to crispy perfection, served with coconut rice topped with fried shallots, a homemade mango sauce and a generous side salad of zucchini ribbons, carrots, capsicum, pomegranate and cashews (ie. not your ‘typical boring side salad’). All the flavours created a wonderful fusion of modern Australian and Asian cuisines.Kim recommended one of her smoothie creations – ginger beer, mint and passionfruit which was very refreshing and complimented my meal perfectly.I also got a chocolate, date and walnut meringue cake to takeaway which was crisp on the outside and rich and fudge-like in the centre (Donna would approve!)Combined with the nautical cafe fitout, picturesque location and Kim’s hospitality, this place is ship-shape perfection.
First night in the new house and came in for an early breakfast. Food was delicious and very good sizing for value. Coffees were also very good. Love the Interior too and the cozy atmosphere. We will definitely be back in the future for some of the take away cakes too.
We love this little treasure for dinner, lunch or a treat! Flavour, variety, love and skill put into each dish. Date chocolate meringue torte is to die for, seafood soup done just right, homemade pate! Yum. Warm fire in winter and cool courtyard in summer – a great treat each time we return to country homeland from city! Please don’t ever leave!
