On a quiet side street in Port Melbourne, lies the Cricketers – walking past the Cricketers, you wouldn’t know there’s a pub inside.Blink and you may miss on something pretty special…. Howzat!
There are two reasons why I loved this place
-1) happy hour cocktails! We got $10 cocktails – and they happen from 3-7pm most nights – that’s pretty special.
2) the vibe, it feels like the locals choice for a family dinner, or an afterwork spot, or somewhere to meet a group of friends. It is what the title says – a neighbourhood eatery.
There’s lots of nooks, and breakaway spots – you can sit by the fireplace, or the sitting room at the front, but we sat out the back where it has the modern outdoor pub vibe. Walking through the door, it knocked me out for six.
I was invited to try their menu. The food is traditional pub fare, but it ups the ante. Their regular menu looks pretty good, but as a general rule, I like to do the specials because you get to see their creativity. My friend had the pork schnitzel and I had the meatball & shittake mushroom chicken parma. Both were delicious. Particularly the pork schnitzel -it should be on the main menu. Large generous portions, it feels like a good family pub dinner. We also had the mac and cheese, and the fruit tart (also a special) for dessert. Boonie would be satisfied.
If I lived in Port Melbourne, I would certainly be here most weeks, but I’ll probably be making an effort straight down the cover drive to return here for a Sunday sesh, or a Bottomless brunch.
So what’s the score? Did it hit the border for a 4? Or did it knock it out of the park for a 6/5? Somewhere between 4 and 5 – so I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt – it deserves to stay. I don’t like the Cricketers… oh no…. I loved it.
Walking into The Cricketers, you will pass a few cosy dining areas but don’t stop till you reach the gin garden at the back. This charming and laid-back space is the place to be, whether you are after a meal or just some drinks.
Settling in and enjoying our tasty Espresso Martini and Aperol Spritz, my partner and I waited excitedly for the food to arrive. First up was the fried calamari. This was a delicious dish, whereby the calamari was tender and coated in a crisped and well-seasoned batter.
This was followed by our mains – the meatballs parma and one of the specials of the day, the pulled pork gnocchi. The meatballs parma was a very hearty meal, and it took all our effort to finish it because we sure weren’t going to let good food go to waste. The chicken was lightly crumbed, and was covered with generous amount of gooey cheese and rich tomato sauce. The meatballs were tasty, albeit slightly dry, so thankfully the lavish amount of cheese came to the rescue.
The pulled pork gnocchi was a simple yet lovely dish. The succulent pulled pork, and the luscious sauce was oozing with flavours, while the soft and delicate gnocchi presents a lovely mouthfeel with each bite.
Ending our meal with the incredibly moist and rich sticky date pudding, we were once again guilty of over-indulging. For this, we must thank the wonderful people at The Cricketers for inviting us over, and for looking after us so well!
I went here for dinner. I was invited so I wont comment on the service.
The food was good. Initially I had an entree of calamari and it was cooked perfectly. The calamari was delicious the batter was light and it was some of the best calamari Ive had in a long time.
For mains I shared a piece of barramundi with my partner and the fish just melted in my mouth… it was delicious.
Then we had a special chicken parma with meatballs hahaha. Yes it was an unusual combination but it seemed to work.
The parma appeared to be a bit dry and overcooked around the edges and the chips were dry and cold. But the parma has a great flavour and the meatballs were really good.
The beer garden out the back was great, it was dog friendly, the punters were good and when it got windy during the night the roof closed.
Its worth a visit for a dinner or a drink if your in the area.
I was invited to the newly renovated Cricketers last night and was quite impressed. I loved the beer garden (actually a gin garden) with its impressive array of gin and enjoyable atmosphere. We ordered a lemon fizz cocktail and some calamari to start. The calamari was a generous size considering we had ordered the smaller serve. I also tried an Angus beef slider which was filling too.
By the time I got to my 350g steak I was practically already full! Being parma night my dining companion ordered the korma parma which had a delicious curry sauce under the cheese. This was still crispy and not soggy which was the sign of a very well cooked parm indeed. Both came with chips which were so yummy I continued to eat them well past the point of being bursting.
My steak was flavoursome and huge. I wasnt even able to finish it which is so not like me but I had to leave room for dessert. The bernaise sauce I chose was a little thin but the stunning presentation of the desserts made up for that. I really enjoyed the fondant and loved the crispy wafer element on the plate. The macerated strawberries on the sticky date were also a tasty addition. Great little find, if only I lived closer!
