There’s some gems in shopping centre food courts, and o-bun is one of them.
I’ve had other baos in the past, and while some are better than others, it’s definitely worth trying. I’d stick to the traditional fillings over the quirky as thats where they shine. On this occasion I tried the breakfast bao and the bun fries. The bun fries were okay – I would get that to share between 4 people. They were tasty regardless. I also tried the breakfast bao which was gimmicky but filling. Reasonably priced with friendly service.
O-Bun’s baos are packed with some serious flavours. We were invited in to try their food and were pleasantly surprised. O-Bun has totally shattered the stigma towards foodcourt food that we had.
We got to try all of their 9 different types of baos and our favourites are Charsiu bun (BBQ pork), To bun (tofu), Creeper bun (softshell crab), Hen’s Bun (fried chicken) and of course, the Sweet BJ (Dessert bao).
The softshell crab and fried chicken in the baos were very crispy, the sauces also went really well the with baos. The tofu was a surprise for us, we were expecting boring flavours, but no, the tofu bun was super tasty. The sweet BJ has Ben & Jerry’s ice cream (cookie and cream) inside a deep fried bao. So that’s where the name came from, not what you are thinking, you naughty people. The dessert bao was really good as well.

O-Bun not only does bao, but you can also swap the bao for rice, which totally gets a tick of approval from me, seeing that they serve char siu (BBQ pork) and what better accompaniment to char siu than rice?
Unfortunately the char siu was rather dry and tough, but the maltose sauce did provide a delicious combination of sweet and salty flavours. The rice, on the other hand, was cooked very well – distinct grains that were tender yet retaining a firm bite.
The buns were tasty but nothing exceptional; the Hog Bun being the better of the two as the pork belly was much juicer than the char siu.
The fried mantou was the highlight. Soft in the middle, with a lovely crisped golden skin. As good as, or even better than the fluffy buns.
