I got a $100 voucher to try Rock Sugar so I invited my friend AT to go in for a night of cocktails and Thai food.

We got seated at the bar at first where we can view the fully action of the bartenders making yummy cocktails, but alas our legs are too short for the bar stools so our feet kept dangling. ThankFully the friendly waitress helped us move to a lower table, so we can relax and enjoy ourselves.

I chose a yuzu gin cocktail while AT had a peach cocktail. We had a sip of each others cocktail and they were both delish!

The menu was fully of tantalizing food and we had a hard time deciding. There IS a feed me menu but we decided to order our own cos I am a bit of a control freak and want to know what we are getting

We started off with spiced tuna tartare and smoked ocean trout with betel leaf. Both were delicious and super fresh and its one of our favourite dishes of the night.

Corn on the cob came with sriracha butter, but sadly the flavours were lacking. We both lamented that the best corn was at Mamasita, where the flavours somehow seemed into every corn kernel, which this one at Rock Sugar failed to do.

The chicken ribs was another dish that did not impress my friend. There were two sauces that goes with it but it was placed on two different sides of the dish in big blobs. I would have preferred them to just put it in a little sauce bowl so we could dip the chicken ribs because its just a bit hard to get the sauce and without the sauce the chicken ribs are a bit dry and tasteless.

Mains came and we got soft shell crab salad and green curry with coconut rice. There wasnt a lot of soft shell crab in the salad, but it was yummy. The salad itself was ok, the flavours were not punchy and well balanced. I kept thinking back to the Thai food we had in Long Chim which has bold and super well balanced flavours.

The green curry was the same, probably to cater for milder palates.

We shared the mango tango dessert which once again the peanut and cookie crumble was frustratedly put on different sides of the plate. If I hadnt spotted that it was different, AT would have mango tango with all peanuts and I would have mango tango with all cookie crumble. Darghhhhhh. Otherwise this dessert was quite yummy.

The bill came and it comes to ~$160. Was glad that we had the $100 voucher otherwise I think the whole meal is a bit exxy for what we got.

Nonetheless the atmosphere of this place was great and the staff was friendly and accommodating. It would have been a great place for cocktails and food if they improve their flavours and their plating .

I would like to thank Rock Sugar for your wonderful hospitality and inviting us to try your food.

Rock Sugar, is a Thai-inspired restaurant, known for their extraordinary cocktails and their outstanding share plates. They offer 2 kinds of menus one being the a la carte menu and the other a banquet meal for tables of 8+ which comes in a baby size and a full size. Not only do Rock Sugar cater for any dietary requirements and allergies, they have, to my amazement, presented these banquet meals to suit every possible diet. There are Vegan Banquets, Vegetarian Banquets, Pescartarian Banquets and Gluten Free Banquets! Theres also a banquet for those who have no food restrictions! If you have certain allergies there is a special menu for you too. Wow!
Tonight, my companion and I were invited to try a selection of dishes.
For our entre, we ordered the Srirarcha butter corn on the cob, the beef short rib, the sesame rice crackers, the saltgrass lamb spring rolls and the rocking fried chicken ribs.
The corn on the cob was succulent and juicy and came with a delightful serve of shaved grana padano which gave the dish that extra kick. The beef short rib was absolutely delicious. It was a generous serving and the meat was extremely tender, falling off the bone and hot. The sesame rice crackers were also great and went well the Tumeric nam prik. The chicken ribs were exceptional as well and cooked perfectly – they went beautifully with the chilli caramel. The only downside was we wished there was more of it! The lamb spring rolls were on par with the other dishes beautiful flavours and textures. All of these dishes were faultless.
We shared the Duck Leg Salad which was refreshing, spicy and juicy. All the flavours in the salad were perfectly balanced and went together like a dream! A genuinely stunning dish.
For dessert we chose the Mango Tango which was a simply perfect coconut panna cotta with peanut and almond cookie crumble. We also chose the Spice up Your Life which was a Bounty donut bun! Both desserts were impeccable and completed a truly amazing dining experience.
Rock Sugar is definitely one of the trendiest, certainly unusual and exciting Thai restaurants in Melbourne at the moment. Located at 477 Malvern Rd, South Yarra it sits very near to Williams Rd. They are open for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays and for dinner from Tuesday through to Saturday with bookings available online.
The service was impeccable as well very helpful and friendly staff and the decor was inviting neon lighting, brick walls and a beautifully well stocked bar for all those incredible cocktails they do so well.
What an incredible dining experience at Rock Sugar I was still talking about it days later!
Rock on in to Rock Sugar itll be the best choice youll ever make!

I was invited back to RS and was intrigued to try some different dishes. $100 gets you a banquet for 2 but we chose to order a la carte given it was our third visit. I do appreciate the fact that they have bespoke gf, vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian banquet options- very inclusive indeed.

We started with the singles menu, a tuna tartare and smoked ocean tour betel leaf for me and steamed soft shell crab bun for hubby. I enjoyed my small little bites which led on perfectly to the massaman spring rolls that we order every time without fail. They were a bit stingy on the sauce this time and the sauce is what makes it but they were still delicious.

Hubby wanted the massaman curry and I have to say it was improved on our original visit. With the meat ratio vastly increased. What I really wanted to try where the desserts given we hadnt indulged previously. We made up for it on this occasion ordering both the mango coconut panna cotta and the bounty donut bun. I enjoyed both of these dishes and the panna was a lovely light refreshing way to finish.
    It definitely continues to impress

    Second visit
I was intrigued to be invited to Rock Sugar as its been over a year since my first and only visit and I wanted to eat those delicious lamb spring rolls again. The ambiance is as electric as ever and that goes for the neon signage too. They also play awesome music which really sets the tone for a fun night out.

I decided to try a new dish this time (the food menu is absolutely unchanged from my initial dining experience) and went for the beef cheek. This was a very tender meat paired with chilli coconut cream and pomelo. I loved the freshness of the pomelo but didnt get even the slightest hint of chilli (which actually suits me fine as I dont like spicy food).
Overall, it definitely remains one of the modern and on trend places to see and be seen

Headed to Rock Sugar last night on Valentines Day after previously attempting to go on a Sunday late last year (they are closed on Sundays- why??) and I’m feeling pretty mixed about it. One of the smallest restaurants I’ve been in you are literally seated at the tiniest spot conceivable and encouraged to put the water bottle etc on the ledge on the wall to save space.

Its Melbourne’s latest Thai restaurant positioned to take on the Botherambo’s of the world (they have their ex head chef onboard) offering two hour sittings. Couldn’t go past the fairy floss martinis or #rocktail as they refer to them which definitely has novelty factor with the liquid being served in a beaker that you self pour into the glass over the fairy floss to dissolve the sugar.

Chicken and prawn dumplings needed a dipping sauce as they were quite bland in flavour but the saltbush spring rolls with coconut cream were magnificent. Corn on the cob was kind of Mexican style so not sure where the Asian influence was on that one but still delicious.

Crispy prawn betel leaf was interesting texturally being deep fried rather than fresh and had a punchy dipping sauce. Coconut rice lacked flavour and the massamum curry of 18 hour beef shin could have done with some more meat in it.

I also felt like I was being zoomed out the door despite the fact that we eat super fast anyway and would have been done in less than an hour (food comes out EXTREMELY speedily too). Overall; style but as for substance not so much

Finally got to this place and was not disappointed! Great funky menu, great vibe and great drinks too. Only fault was service was a bit slow and staff werent really be too receptive. Will be back though!

Cute, funky location. Really cool with friends or for a fun Friday night out. Green chicken curry was exceptional. Slow cooked beef cheek was good but wasnt the best I have had- was lacking a little flavor. Great staff, very friendly.

    Thai fusion eatery.

    [INVITATIONAL]

Ambience: The size of the restaurant was on the smaller side, and it felt a little crampy. But at night, the ambience was really nice with dim neon lights.

Service: Staffs were all really nice and professional. Our food also came out pretty promptly.

Food: Baby snapper was pretty yum. It was fried nicely, and was a good size. The sauce can do with a little bit sweet as it was more to sour and salty, and definitely could be more generous with it.

Beef massaman curry was a bit disappointing. Similar to many other reviews, I really think there was almost no kick to the curry as it was too coconuty and bit too sweet, lacking the spice. On the good note, the beef was tender and good portion, other vegs were nice as well though some potatoes were hard and some too soft. Not bad overall but not great either.

Roti bread was decent. Taste was there but it can definitely be less dense and more generous. Rice was cooked properly and great portion.

I had the tamarind sour and it was really great. I love the combo of the flavors! I do feel like it needs ice as it was too sweet, but hey you can always ask for ice!

My friend had their love you long thai tea which was pretty good as well in terms of taste and that cute presentation, but the pearls were unfortunately hard rock we couldn’t even bite into it :/

Price: it’s mostly pretty pricy for the portion, same goes for the drinks.

    YUM: tamarind sour, baby snapper
NAH: the pearls in the thai tea.

photos: baby snapper, massaman curry, roti bread, jasmine rice, tamarind sour and love you long thai tea.

    ( follow for more!)

Ordered: pork belly, braised beef, kingfish, roti, coconut rice, mango tango, fairy floss martini and chee chee martini (we managed to smash these)

LIT!: I loved the fit out of this restaurant and its cool/hip vibe as my friend and I sat at a bar. The star of the show was the pork belly which was soo tender and juicy. The fairy floss and mango tango was an experience too if you like concoctions.

NOT SO LIT: the roti was harder than what Id personally prefer. Also the portion is quite small for all the dishes. We spent $150 between 2 girls.. in hindsight, we probably should have went with the feed me menu. But it was delicious!

    Thanks for having us! X
