What a great place to have dinner in Prahran. As soon as you walk in your greeted by the cool venue with its modern funky fit out , buzzing bar and packed tables facing the open kitchen. Service was very good and our waitress friendly and helpful.
Our food was fantastic starting off with croquettes , olives and baked corn chips with haloumi. Mains were the fillet steak with seared lettuce, duck and the John Dory with a side of green leaves and thick cut chips.
Having eaten our full we managed only to order a beautiful strawberry souffl made perfectly.
Great cocktails and a great night out in a fantastic venue
My review was going to be 5 stars, went down to 3 stars and now its back up to 5 stars. Its an example of how good communication, a friendly attitude and small favours can really make one forget about issues that occur during the night.
We arrived during happy hour and had a few beers to start. One of my dining companions noted that it was unusually busy for a Monday night (this will become relevant later). They were happy to add the beers to the tab and we took our seats at the table. After reviewing the menu, we decided on feed me, after the waiter said the next table was having it to. Be warned – you need to be hungry. Fortunately they let us take away the left overs! We tried hard!
First the food;
Oysters were excellent. I’m a fan of their vinaigrette. Mind you I didn’t expect any less as we frequently come here for their one buck shuck on a Wednesday night and they oysters are always fresh and tasty.
The next course was the Sea Bream Carpaccio. The fish was good but it needed a little more citrus (we duly fixed this with the lemon from the oysters.) but the choice of grapes was excellent. The other flavours balanced well.
Then came the fish sandwich. I honestly thought this was a bit of a funny choice. It’s not exactly a finger sandwich… it’s more of an entire sandwich! Tasted really great; but half of it would have been enough.
If that wasn’t enough, the fried chicken then came. Two big piece per person. Excellent. Not too oily – another interesting choice to mix with caviar to offer some saltiness.
The main of wagyu rump was fantastic. Perfectly cooked to medium rare, a very generous serve. They offer a range of sauces (we asked the chef to recommend something) and it came with herb butter and lemon. To be honest, it didn’t really need anything else to go with it. The accompanying potato were just a little spicy and perfect and the charred cabbage was a good choice. I was getting a bit full by now.
They then gave us a special dessert; apparently because the service was slow. I love dessert. This was excellent. A work of art, almost too nice to eat.
They have a very interesting wine list with a selection from all over the world. They only serve house wines by the glass; having said that the house Tempranillo is a great example of the grape and we had a bottle. This was followed by a bottle of Chianti on their recommendation (under cork!) as the food was slow.
Onto the service. First we were wondering why things were a bit slow; they took the wine away and was forever before the glasses was refilled. The water glass were also empty for a while where eventually we helped ourselves. The waiter also kept apologising it was her second shift at the Smith (although judging from the way she poured the wine it’s definitely not her second shift – must have had quite a bit of experience in hospitality). Eventually they came and apologised for the service as they were unexpectedly busy with 2 chefs managing 40 covers so were understaffed both front and back of house. After all, it was a Monday, who would have thunk it?!
The net result was that we got an extra nice dessert and perhaps drank a bit too much wine while waiting for food (this time they left the bottle at the table). At the end I had a chat with the manager; ultimately I was extremely happy with everything and was quite pleased at how they had managed a difficult service. At $100 per head it was expensive (as a head line figure) – but realistically with less to drink (and a more realistic amount of food) it can come in at around $60 or $70 per head; you could go either way and be extremely satisfied. Next time – bottomless brunch with soul Saturday!
