Ive been here three times and theyve all been good experiences. Its best to make a booking before hand because this place can get crowded at night. The overall vibe inside is nice – dim lighting and interior decor that includes manila ropes and tonnes of liquor bottles. I like the open grill kitchen in the middle of the restaurant, where you can watch the chefs cook. There are also booths where you can have a little more privacy with friends or loved ones. Basically, you order from an iPad and the food (which takes a while to come out – and usually one at a time) will come to you. The quality of food seems to have remained the same, which is a good thing. My favourites are the chicken skewers (perfect flavour) and the salmon sashimi (fresh and thick cuts). I also recommend the watermelon passion mocktail – simply delicious.
Maedaya never disappoints with food. Would be a 5 star if price was a little more reasonable and if service was a little better as they totally missed out my order. But will definitely come back for the food, only for special occasions though as this place is not wallet friendly of the bunch.
The vibe was really nice. I love the order system with tablet but it also makes the service super confusing and messy. The food is mediocre, especially the maki roll. The renkon chips was way overcooked and not crispy at all. The eel is okay. You cant go wrong with it but the eel here was burnt and it has that unpleasant aftertaste. Overall, its a decent place to have snack, tapas and a few drinks. Dont expect much from it.
Been coming here for years. Amazing food, definitely go for the yakitori which I reckon is the best in Melbourne. Definitely the most standout being grilled on real charcoal. The sushi is also top notch. Will definitely be back again soon.
I used to live really close to here and came a lot, but then they got popular, expanded and for a while the food just wasnt that good and had lots of staff turnover. So I was really wondering what it would be like this time. I must say Maedaya is certainly making a return to the glory days of when it first opened. For those not familiar with the concept, Izakaya is a basically Japanese tapas and there is charcoal grill. It’s great as you can order as much or as little as you want, can finish what you have before ordering more and everyone can pick something they like (including fussy children). They also have a Japanese BBQ option upstairs. The only down side is that it can get expensive if you’re hungry!
When it first opened, they had physical menus and there was only so many things they could fit on. After a while came iPad ordering and the menu grew and grew; to the point where it was hard to know what to order and I think quality came at the expense of quality.
This time I went back it was good to see that they had reduced the menu but gone back to focussing on quality. Little things like how well the chicken balls were made, the presentation of the tempura. For a while their perfectly spherical rice balls became squashed – it’s almost like the chef didn’t have time or didn’t care enough. They had taken the rice balls off the menu, but the chicken balls were perfect. I noticed they had reduced the sushi and sashimi offerings (a little disappointing) but had more noodle dishes (great!); the effort to offer just enough but to do these dishes well has certainly paid off. We also had the tempura udon – it was great, perfectly presented, one piece of different vegetables. I did notice they didn’t serve this with dipping sauce. The tuna tataki is excellent!
They also have a great range of sake, other traditional Japanese drinks, and Kirin on tap (happy hour 1730-1830 every night). On a nice warm night it’s perfect to sit on the outside tables and eat and drink!
I’m just so happy to see that they’ve gone back to doing what made it my favourite Japanese restaurant in Melbourne for a very long time, and will be back very soon. I hope the Japanese BBQ is just as good.
Food is quite delicious, sushi and sashimi range is not huge, the portion is very generous. They used the e menu on an iPad but its messed up all the time and messed up the order so I couldnt try the seafood pancake
Good service and good food!
I wanted to eat everything on the menu although they did get rid of some items on the menu but despite that, there is still some variety there.
Would definitely order the udon and salmon sushi again since it was my highlight during this eatery!
