I was excited to be invited to check out the new Furuta dessert house given my last real experience with green tea was over ten years ago in Japan. The owners of Furuta have cleverly created three of these branches (with a fourth opening shortly in Chadstone) really jumping onboard the matcha craze that has gripped Australia for the last few years. The menu is comprised of all things matcha from lattes to softserves to cheesecake and even a tiramisu. There’s a serious amount of matcha flavour too which is good news for the green tea lovers. If you aren’t the greatest fan of this flavour never fear as there is an extensive range of other desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth. We tried to crepe cake (in three different flavours #variety) and enjoyed mango, chocolate and strawberry. I was pleased to see and taste real chunks of fruit within the many layers of the super fine crepes. There were a lot of delicious textures and techniques involved to create such an intricate desert. I loved the coconut milkshake too which had great and intense coconut flavour. I felt like I was on a tropical getaway. I also sampled a more traditional beverage the milk tea with black pearls. I have a feeling this is going to be very popular. The matcha soft serve was refreshing and pretty in its cute matcha cone. There’s not a huge amount of seating but it’s ultimately designed to grab your matcha sundae or frappe and continue your walk around the shopping centre. Something different to check out for an authentic Japanese dessert
On a recent visit to Eastland shopping centre I bumped into friends and we decided to grab a snack and drink. One friend doesn’t drink coffee so we decided to give this matcha place a go. The last time I had matcha of any description was in Japan maybe 6 or 7 years ago so was keen to get reacquainted. I ordered the mango milkshake, while others ordered coconut milkshake, milk tea and a matcha latte (iced). My mango drink was sweet and tasty but I tried the coconut milkshake and for me that was the standout. The milk tea had black jelly balls in the bottom which gave it an interesting texture. There was a large variety of options to blend within your drinks. We ordered a selection of crepe cakes to try. These were an interesting idea of wafer thin crepes alternating with cream. Unfortunately they had run out of the matcha flavoured crepe cakes so we went for the strawberry, mango and chocolate ones instead. Eager to get a taste for matcha I ordered a matcha soft serve. This tasted just like I remember from my trip in Japan. There were only a couple of tables to sit at but there seemed to a steady flow of people coming mostly for the drinks and taking them onward on their shopping journey.
