Kyoto Cafe has been open for a few years now, but I think they’re in danger of slipping in quality.
Having been to Kyoto a number of times, when I think about the city, I think about delicate, well crafted food.
I think the restaurant is trying to mimic that feeling, but somehow the execution isn’t there.
With mostly Japanese staff front and back, I get a bench seat in front of the kitchen. This is my favourite seat, as I get to watch the cooks do their thing.

*Grilled Salmon Crepe – The crepe was pre-made, kept under trays, then reheated on service. If you have batter already, it only takes 1-2 mins to make the crepe. It’s a sweet batter and made slightly thicker than what a crepe should be. 3 pieces of salmon were flame grilled with the blow torch. The flavours aren’t pairing well together with the sweet crepe, grilled salmon, rice ball, pickled ginger and mayo-dressed salad.

*Tempura Jyubako – The tempura is freshly battered and fried. The downside is, it’s placed on top of steaming hot rice, so the steam comes up and makes the tempura soggy. In addition, a light soy sauce is drizzled on top, so makes it doubly soggy. I would have preferred the sauce and tempura on the side. The tempura batter itself is also quite thick and not as light as it could be.
*Hand drip coffee – made from organic coffee from Kyoto, the black coffee is smooth and well rounded. Very nice.
*Kirin – probably the best thing I had during the meal. The Kirin is poured from the tap and is extremely cold and refreshing.
If you love your beer – get one, even at 11am on a Sunday.
I think instead of offering everything Japanese, maybe focus on a handful of things and do it really well.
Lovely staff though, and the restaurant does have a nice clean design and ambiance, but I think I could have chosen better dishes. Maybe next time.

Came here with the boyfriend on Friday night. We shared chicken gyoza and popcorn chicken. He has a bento box for his main-it looked impressive and he said it was super tasty. I had the steamed veggies which were also presented beautifully-in a wooden box with the flame underneath. Eaten with pink salt and light soy it was a lovely light dinner. Staff were really friendly-would definitely come back.

Absolutely love this cafe! Great service , lovely ambience and simply refined Japanese cuisine. Thoroughly enjoyed the unagi bento and desserts – black sesame puff and opera matcha . Highly recommended to visit 🙂

Ordered the chicken katsu curry. The chicken has a deliciously crispy coating. The curry had a wonder depth of flavour and was definitely the standout of the dish. Service was impeccable.

Been walking past this place for years and today finally decided to give it a go after knowing it is hand crafted by Japanese chef. Excellent food and service, really assembled Maedaya on Bridge Road. We really enjoyed the Bento and Okonomiyaki. However, we were a bit disappointed that the bento had no steam rice! Really wish they could include a small bowl of rice as an option for greater satisfaction

Edit: tried the black pork katsu bento box, the katsu was dry. Chawanmushi was over cooked. Do not try the matcha latte bubble tea. Bubbles are extremely soggy. A very average.

Do take advantage of their daily special. Each day of the week they have a different deal. My group and I had the matcha latte and dessert set on Sunday for $8.

I really enjoy the desserts here at this cute Japanese restaurant, the matcha desserts although pricey are some of the best I have had around the area. The savoury food I found was very average, would recommend the matcha drinks, the matcha puff and also the matcha cakes
