The day that Oliver Brown came to Melbourne was (or should have been) a cause for celebration. But regardless of the fact that most Melbournians may not have even heard of it, they’ve also set up shop in an unassuming and, dare I say, poorly strategic position. They’re located in Eastland’s main shopping complex–which means opening hours are limited. Not only that, but they’re situated away from any other food places or food courts, in the section with all the baby stores. Sadly, this means reduced publicity and that fewer people will be compelled to try it. Well, they’re missing out because the waffles here are phenomenal. I first tried OB in Sydney over a year ago, and this Melbourne branch kept the same standard. The waffles have great texture, that appropriate level of resistance to the bite; the crispy, slightly caramelised outside; and the slightly fluffy interior. There’s chocolate chips in the batter too. The generous Belgian chocolate draped over the portion is heavenly and rounds out the excellence. I had the grilled banana option, and it was fantastic adding nicely caramelised banana to the mix.
I was a little perplexed and peeved though, that, even though it was supposed to close at 5 the day we went, the interior seating was sealed off already at 3.20. We were allowed to sit outside in the shopping centre walkway (maybe half a dozen small tables), so that was fine. But then, I was told that our waffles would be served in takeaway boxes. This was actually a bit annoying, because it was tedious to cut the waffles with a knife and fork while it’s inside a narrow, walled box. It also meant that my photos look pretty darn ordinary (my apologies). Before 4pm they were already stacking the tables and chairs of the interior section. I can understand if the staff don’t get payed after 5 and they want to be out of there on time, but I think that using takeaway equipment at the expense of convenience for the customer, merely to avoid washing a few extra dishes that would take 5 minutes to clean (before official closing time no less), is quite over-the-top. The staff were still nice though and it’s a small price to pay for awesome waffles.
Bottom line is, don’t worry about the current average rating. Try the coffee and whatnot if you will, but don’t judge until you’ve had the waffles.

We had a take away latte and soy chai latte. Absolutely delicious and both were the perfect temperature. They were quiet busy and we definitely know why!

I had flourless chocolate cake and lemon, lime and mint. While my friend had passionberry twist. Average tasting cake. Drink was overly sweet.

Yummy gf chocolate cake and great coffee. Nice cafe inside the shopping centre. I would come here again.

At first I was worried the cake wouldn’t be nice, but they warmed it up and the chocolate toppings melted into the spongey chocolate cake, and it was marvellous! It’s rare to have chocolate cake this good that is gluten free!

The coffee & hot chocolate I rate as close to the best in Melbourne. Service is quick and friendly. First experienced Oliver Brown in Sydney, great that they are now in my local area. Don’t know how you always make your hot chocolates the best, keep it up, the chocolates on the side are a great addition. First rate.

After a wait, i proceeded to watch my coffee with no sugar have a tsp of sugar put in. When i addressed this situation they were sure they didn’t, even though i clearly saw it. I accepted i may of been wrong, took it away to only have 2 sips then it landed in the bin along with the burnt milk.

Decided to try its Belgian chocolate and churros. However churros machine wasn’t working so I opted for the waffles drizzled with chocolate. It was filling and chocolate was thick & smooth.
I ordered a green matcha latte to go with it.
It’s at the new wing of Eastland S/C- near to the Toyland area (Ground floor)
