A coupla decades ago, this was the location I took my soon-to-be forever partner. He’d never had Japanese food, whereas, it was my favourite cuisine. I had no idea how frightened he was all those years ago, considering he thought the best food came out of a place with a big yellow ‘M’. I was on a mission to educate his palate. It’s fair to say, it didn’t happen overnight, but he did realise that Japanese food is nothing to be afraid of, and now he adores tuna sushi. Now we both love it, as do all of our kids.

I am really not sure why we stayed away so long, but we have since revisited and do not plan to make it a one-off.

There is a little amuse-bouche of vegetables to get you in the mood. While I was only moderately keen on the house-cocktail, every other drink I have tried has been delicious, including the sake – I am a novice, but the staff will help advise. The prices for drinks are very reasonable.

Three banquette options are available, and look good value, but we only gone our own way.

I think the sashimi entree is great value, in my two recent visits I haven’t managed to go past it. Soups too, are worthwhile

Tempura main here is generous and well cooked. Okonomiyaki too, is a delightful version, with chunks of the octopus obvious within the crisp little balls. Tatsuta Age gives you big chunks of crispy chicken, with good flavour.

I quite enjoy hearing the clicking of the chef at the teppanyaki grill, he always seems to be enjoying himself. Some of the staff are very knowledgeable, though you may encounter a newbie, they’re happy to find the answer to your question.

A disappointment was that, on a recent visit, although we made a booking, our table was right in front of the door, rather than slightly further into the restaurant away from the rather cold breeze every time someone entered – on a Melbourne winter even a partition wont stop that chill. I felt we sat at the table you’d expect as a walk-in, rather than book for, pity.

My family and I have been regular diners at Suishaya Inn for a very long time and always loved the food, service and ambiance- it was our favourite Japanese restaurant. However it changed ownership some time ago and the staff have changed completely, as has the food quality. I’m sad to say but we were very disappointed with our recent meal, it was nowhere near the high standard of the previous owners in flavour or appearance. Our favourite dishes were very disappointing and lacked flavour. I regret to say we won’t be returning.

went here for my birthday and was pleasantly surprised. every dish had been really nice, and especially the miso soup was the best miso I have ever had. staff were really nice and there wasn’t a wait between dishes. the potato on the tempura dish was undercooked so we didn’t eat it, staff had asked us if everything was ok and they were happy to get us a new batch. 🙂

had a really good experience here with tasty food.

Huge portions but just average food, very salty.

My teriyaki chicken drowned in sauce and very very salty but gathering from the clientele, it caters for the Western palate and possibly, those that like a big feed. At $20 a plate, it’s not really that economical in the end.

The tempera veggies were very good and the batter was very light and not very oily. The service was fine as was the ambience of the place. It’s a very below average place but good if you don’t know any better. Doesn’t seem to be much competition around for Japanese food.

19/06/2016 – Best Japanese ever! Top quality food, attentive servers and menu has both hot and cold dishes so there is something for everyone. Everything was perfect.

Started visiting this place again after being disappointed after new management and am pleased to say that it is amazing again! Have been going here about once a fortnight its that good! the banquet with the miso steak is a personal favourite as is the bento box. Really friendly and lovely from the first impression till leaving

Staff were very friendly and lovely. Didn’t have a long wait time between entrees and mains, was just right. Food was nice, like your standard Japanese cuisine. Reasonably priced aswell.
