Good value for your money!
We came for the $20 steak special and the Grosvenor did not disappoint. It surely was not the best steak Ive ever had but I doubt you get a better steak for $20 (or at least I wouldnt know where). Their selection of horseradish and mustard was fantastic too and the steak was cooked as per request. The only thing I didnt like was the red wine jus as it tasted a a lot like vegemite.
Recommended! 4.2 Stars
Summary: 4.6. We had a superb time here. The bistro is terrific, the new menu great and the food fabulous. The dishes are well presented using excellent produce that is skillfully cooked. Its a good wine list as well.
Review:
This is a large multi faceted venue on Brighton Rd. It offers a lot of options – pub, bistro, restaurant, bottle shop, burgers, etc. Theres heaps going on and it works. I know the immediate area well and this is a great dining option and well worth travelling to. We went for lunch today in the bistro out the back. The area is lovely and light even on a sultry grey day like today just before the heavens opened.
We started with pre lunch drinks. I had a Negroni and my partner an Aperol spritz. Both were excellent. They were well made and up there with the best.
We started our meal with the tasting plate. This is a gorgeous offering. Just a beautiful selection of antipasto which we loved. First, you get fantastic plain wood fired pizza topped with rosemary. While this is delicious on its own the plate includes mortadella, prosciutto, two types of salami, caperberries, a selection of small olives, cornichons, aged parmigiana reggio and mozzarella. Every one of these components was absolutely as fresh as a daisy and thrillingly flavoursome. The dish reminded us of similar dishes wed had in Italy. The one here at the Grosvenor compares excellently. To us it was best practice. Its everything a charcuterie board should be.
I had the lamb shoulder for main. This too is a wonderful dish. The lamb is beautiful, moist and succulent. There are excellent greens with this dish as well. The char grilled broccolini is particularly arresting. Its a super dish for sure. The worlds most beautiful woman had the pork belly. This was exactly as described. Absolutely delicious and tender. The crackling was nothing short of magnificent. We chose one accompanying side dish. Roasted cauliflower with ancient grains and almonds. This too was great. Both mains and the salad were attractive and a very good size.
We were a little taken aback at the high quality of the food at the Grosvenor despite the previous laudatory reviews wed seen. This is seriously beautiful food they offer here. Excellent produce, superbly cooked and presented with outstanding flavours and textures. They are good sized meals too as mentioned and represent very good value for money. Add a very good wine list – I had a glass of Malbec and my partner a local Pinot Gris – and youve got a terrific place.
We couldnt fit dessert in sadly. Well rectify that on our next visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here and would return anytime.
Our sincere thanks to the venue for the kind invitation to dine here.
With a new head chef comes a new menu. Boasting an extensive menu with a handful of pub classics, wood fired pizzas and dry aged beef I was delighted to be invited to sample a portion of it. The space is quite large, you’ve got your main bar, bistro dining room (which we sat in) and private function room. It was apparent that this was a family friendly venue and the menu reflected accordingly.
Being Friday none of us took advantage of Hoppy Hour where all beers are discounted. In fact if you check out their site they’ve got some amazing deals throughout the week so strategise accordingly. I opted for a watermelon margarita, subtle melon flavour and sour from the citruses.
Leading up to dinner it did cross my mind several times to pre-order their whole suckling pig. It wasn’t going to happen but I’d love to see the food photos of that banquet, I’d be quite epic!
We started of with some lamb ribs with salsa verde mayonnaise. The lamb was melt in your mouth tender, the sauce however was quite light and did not distract from the pureness of the lamb meat. A squeeze of lemon helped cut through that rich fat.
We also got a plate of onion rings to nibble on, well fried but did not remain that crisp for long. Still tasty and well seasoned fried snacks to nibble on whilst waiting for our mains. Feedback would be that it was near impossible to dip those onion rings into that small tub of tomato sauce!
All the small plates were generous as was our plate of prosciutto, stracciatella and marinated peppers. Salty, creamy, sweet and crunchy from the toast. Nice.
We got a monstrous 700g rib eye, of course we shared and would have preferred the chef slice it up after resting. It was a tad awkward sharing however they do have a steak designed for table sharing. The steak was cooked perfectly, pink all the way through and was beautifully tender and juicy. We got some peppercorn & dijon sauce which left little impact, we were however pleased with their mustard selection. It ranged from mindblowing hot English mustard to a more mild mustard such as seeded. We were also given a bottle of Melbourne hot sauce which should come with a heed of caution, one drop was enough to question my decision.
We also shared their lamb shoulder which came with bagna cauda (which is apparently a traditional Piedmontese anchovy sauce). It was rich and a tad gamey, I can’t imagine finishing this by myself so I’m glad we shared which was enjoyable in small portions. The charred broccolini was a nice touch. Speaking of good vegetables, we got a side of green beans with ricotta salata and smoked almonds. The beans we snappy and vibrant with an underlying smokiness from the almonds. Crunch!
As much as I wanted to convince myself that there was room for dessert we were defeated. It did look tempting though, they source their gelato from 7 Apples as well as bake a nutella pizza. Perhaps next time (with a suckling pig).
A place with great vibes and busy atmosphere. Loved the meat fridge as soon as you walk in. I would think that this place is more of a steak house than a bistro!
For three people we ordered the Scotch Fillet (Medium) and the Banjo Cut Lamb Shoulder. Why only two dish you might ask? Because the lamb shoulder was massive. I’d suggest 3 people tackle that one 🙂
The lamb shoulder was soft and tender, the meat just melted in your mouth and the juice just busts through. It was a 30~40 min wait for this, but grab yourself a drink and you can have a good chat while you wait.
The Scotch Fillet was on point. Not what you’d expect from your average bistro. This is more in line with a steak house kind of level steak. I think the prices is more than reasonable for this.
Overall the place was great, good for family night outs.
Special thanks for the invite Grosvenor Hotel
Grosvenor Hotel in Balaclava. Thanks for the invite from Grosvenor hotel and it was a nice experience to dine in at Saturday night. I will recommend the grass feed eye fillet which is one of the best Steak I had in Melbourne. Nice cooked, juicy and succulent tender tasty. The side dishes are a bit salty but as a Bristo it is well matched with the beer or wine. After the dinner we also received a gift bag from the restaurant and thanks for their hospitality and definitely a great place for steak. Highly recommended.

We dined at the Grosvenor last night choosing a later evening sitting. To our surprise the place was absolutely packed and we soon discovered why. Thursday night is Steak Night and offers fine cuts at generous prices. Add to that the two for one cocktail specials across most of their $20 cocktail range and Id be lining up if I lived in any proximity to this venue.
A classic pub look on the outside with a great internal fitout comprising of multiple zones including a barrel hall wine bar area, bistro and even live music playing at the back. When we walked in we walked right past the meat ageing room which gave us an indication of what treats lay ahead.
We sat at a dimly lit corner table and took advantage of the cocktail specials which included great drinks like the Ginger Ninja, Passionfruit Mojito and my favourite Cucumber Collins which backed a fair punch and a great cucumber taste.
We just had to try their wood fire pizza so shared the Straccia pizza with its namesake cheese, pesto and cherry tomatoes. The crust was magnificent with spring and bite.
For our mains we had the Steak Night eye fillet cooked medium rare with chips and a salad, red wine jus, bearnaise and horseradish. A thick quality easy cutting steak that was cooked just under medium rare. We also tried the 24 hour slow cooked lamb shoulder Which was rolled
And stuffed and came with greens. Tender and flavoursome.
We had hardly any room left but needed to try a couple of their dessert (ok three). The coconut and
mango flavoured house made magnum was a lighter option that we really loved. We indulged a little more heavily in the dark chocolate mousse which came with hazelnuts, berries and a tart passionfruit pulp. The Grosvenor Bombe (Alaska) was where we finally admitted defeat although it was great with its torched Italian meringue, ice cream and chocolate.
We dined as guests of Grosvenor tonight so I wouldnt normally mention service. That said I feel that the standard we observed and experienced for ourselves does need to be called out. On such a busy night waiting staff let nothing slip from our water being filled to our plates being promptly cleared to checking in on how meals were.
Exceptional!!!
I was lucky enough to dine as a guest of Grosvenor last night (pronounced Grovner) and was thoroughly impressed. It looked like an rsl from the outside and while there are pokies in a section of the venue it was a great space and a really extensive one at that. They also have live music of a Thursday which was cool, other benefits of Thursday include 2 for 1 cocktails which we embraced with great abandon.
The place was pumping which we came to learn was because of steak night. Having tried the eye fillet myself I attest to its fabulousness and would definitely recommend attending on a Thursday Drinks wise we tried the cucumber Collins and passionfruit mojito as well as a ginger ninja and St Kilda both of which were vodka based. I enjoyed the St Kilda the most which had a similar flavour profile to pimms.
We started with a basil pesto pizza with cherry tomatoes and cheese. Wood fired pizza never ceases to delight me and this made for a truly fabulous slice. Big tick. We were then straight into the steak and having seen the meat in the open fridge I knew I was going to be in for a treat. Its all high caliber ingredients here. The bernaise accompaniment was perfection and the red wine jus couldnt be faulted.
A note to the stellar service we received and observed other tables receiving too. This was in stark contrast to the service Id received the night before at another venue and the impact it has on your evening cannot be underestimated. We also tried the 24 hour cooked lamb shoulder. This presented a little differently to the description in that it was stuffed but I really enjoyed the flavours and loved the sauce on the plate which was a nice surprise given I had no idea what bagna cauda was (its an Italian style garlic butter sauce in case youre wondering)
We were super full but left no stone unturned with desserts and sampled three. There was the house made magnum which was a pretty little coconut and mango ice cream, the hazelnut bombe with chocolate sauce and a dark chocolate mousse with passionfruit sorbet. I was kicking myself we didnt get cheese when I saw their ridiculously epic cheese selection so Ill just have to go back. An overall exceptional evening
