It was as good as my friend said. I’m a member of a coffee connoisseur’s group in Melbourne that goes for cuppas at various espresso-forward cafes. The group’s leader knows his stuff. He claimed that one of the top three flat whites he’s had in Victoria came from a lady who drives a coffee van based in Shepparton. Aside from the fact that it’s flipping Shep (?!?) I couldn’t believe that quality coffee could come from a van. So when the bloke told us that his friend was coming to Vic Market, I turned down a lucrative hospital shift at Sunday penalty wage rates just to see if he knew what he was talking about.Turns out he was right. This is surprisingly good coffee for a food truck. My flat white was smooth, had rich flavour, while not being overpowering. There was no papery taste to it, either, which often happens when your coffee comes in a disposable cup. The lady who runs the van doesn’t even use full-cream milk, which surprised me, because the taste was so creamy. I wouldn’t drive across the state to follow this van like some kind of coffee groupie, but if you see it at a country market or a music festival, you can rest assured that it’s not coffee that you just have to settle for. Although you should try to go when the older woman, Leanne, is at the machine, because my friend says she pulls a better shot than her son does.
