One of my favourite patisseries. Almost all things have been sampled now and not one item has been disappointing. The crossiants are just clear winners – flakey, fresh, buttery, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside….expensive menu, but well worth it!

Agath at South Melbourne Market offers a great range of pastries that are made fresh! Ihad the pear pastry as well as the pain au chocolat.

The pear pastry was quite sweet, but it wasn’t too overwhelming nor dense. The pain au chocolat was nice and fluffy, with a fairly crispy shell and although the chocolate was minimal (as with every other pain au chocolat), it was still a nice sweet flavour amidst the buttery flakey pastry.
Would definitely recommend to anyone who goes to South Melbourne market – and would even say that this is one of Melbourne’s best patisseries (second to Lune though)!

Service: was very quick and they were baking at the back, and the good thing about Agath is that they don’t run out as quickly as Lune does! Only downside is that since it is a market, other than the shared spaces near the seafood places, there isn’t really anywhere to eat.

The pastries here are very good, but also pretty expensive, with some of the pastries like the flan and flavoured croissants being sold for $8. The bakery is a hit at South Melbourne market, but the queues are usually not more than a few minutes long. Staff are generally friendly but sometimes give off an arrogant vibe.

Some of their stand outs include their Asian inspired pastries like the Pandan flan and croissant, and chilli crab croissant. The Pandan flavours have been readily available recently but it’s been a while since we last saw the chilli crab variety. It really does taste like chilli crab though, and is worth a try despite its price tag.

Their pastries are flaky, crispy and excellent. Our favourite used to be their ham, cheese and bechamel croissant. Really filling and absolutely delicious; even with a decent amount of bechamel it didn’t taste too creamy because the bechamel was well balanced. However they have since stopped producing this croissant and now only have a ham and cheese puff, which is a lot smaller for the same price and quite disappointing.

They also produce some cakes but these are less popular and less impressive.

Given the price it’s really more of a luxury to buy from here, and even then only if they produce something unique that you’re craving.
