My go to place to get oysters whenever I go to this market ! I find the oysters extremely fresh as its so busy , always takeaway a few dozen for family events
We come here every time when we go to South Melbourne market. We enjoy their oysters as they have so many varieties! Also they provide many types of sauce for us to choose.
Recently they have just expended two more shops next to the original one which sell cooked seafood and flavored sashimi. They all are very fresh and delicious.
This is more of a 3.5 stars. This place is incredibly popular with seafood goers, with the standing benches often packed with people, in particular tourists, eating their raw and cooked seafood.
They have a cold and hot seafood section. The cold seafood section is mostly made up of little dishes that you can mix and match. These used to be $4 each and 3 for $10, and at that price it was somewhat reasonable depending on what you pick, but still expensive enough that eating here on a regular basis is somewhat prohibitive. However, they have now increased their prices to 4 for $15, only a $1 discount over individual dishes, and at that price it’s honestly not worth it. The hot section has a whole other range of dishes including favourites like Moreton bay bugs and lobster.
In general, the quality of the food is well represented by the photos – they taste about as good as they look, which is pretty good. We tried the cold dishes before their prices went up, and some dishes were more worth the money, whereas some didn’t have much seafood and more fillers. We also stopped by once when they were closing up and lucked upon a tray of grilled bay bugs for just $8. For that price and the quality of the food, it was well worth it.
Apart from that, the food is a bit expensive unless you’re a tourist and want to try something new.
When I do stop by South Melbourne Market, I always seem to stop by here for fresh oysters. There’s other stalls that sells oysters too, but I like the ones here best!!
Highly recommended by my friend, who religiously bring her friends and relatives here whenever they visit from overseas. High quality seafood, eat them fresh for sea urchin at $4 or have them cook you a half crayfish for $25 (across their fresh food store) There is some hit and miss for the seafood..liked I brought 2 craygish which are overcooked but the ftied white bait and Cuttlefish are cooked to perfection. You will not find any seatings here, it is a grab and go or stand and eat situation. Experience the lively culture here and prepare to eat lotsa of super fresh oysters.
Our go-to stall in the South Melbourne Market for fresh seafood. Theyre busy all the time and theres people everywhere having their oysters on the spot. Id recommend the oysters but have them at the nearby food court area instead to avoid the crowd.
If youre craving for an oyster fix, this is the place to be. You can find an array of freshly chucked oysters from all over the country amongst fresh sashimi and cooked seafood such lobsters, deep fried school prawns, calamari and octopus. A limited supply of salads and the usual fish and chip shop stables such as potato cakes are available as well. I ordered a little bit of everything to try including the storm clam ($5 each), fresh and cooked oysters ($2.50 each), scallops and lightly seared tuna on a scallop shell ($3.50 each or 3 for $10). The seafood was tasty and flavourful, the sauces and seasoning arent overpowering. Service is fast and efficient. Expect to line up on the weekends and during brunch/lunch hours.
